A mysterious old man. A sudden and inexplicable act. And from there, a small town becomes the epicenter of violence and bloodshed driven by poisonous bigotry and hate. @ericlarocca.bsky.social weaves themes of loss and trauma against the search for an ever-absent god.

OPUS is a thinker film on the subject of post-Jonestown cults. Ayo Edebiri is unafraid and compelling, and Malkovich is superb in his creepy charisma and treachery. (Think: the fantasies of Elon Musk as articulated by Right Said Fred.)

The year is approaching its 66.6% mark, and I’ll say that WEAPONS is the most engaging new flick I’ve seen. Director Zach Cregger ups the ante on themes from BARBARIAN (2022) with a narrative whose lines cross (literally?) from slow-burn batshit to full-on paroxysmal batshit. Tons of fun!

Look, I’ve got nothing against smiling. You do it when you absolutely must. But when a strange dog in a strange town flashes one at you…

My drabble, “The Smile Factor”, is in the TWF mix here on horrortree.com.

When you want Ripley in power but to put Ripley in power you have to deploy Carrie.

Good article! It’s naive, indeed, to deny centuries of religious evolution and ignore the things that faith, whether real or appropriated, makes people do. The novella I’ve queried to one publisher is steeped in these things. And the homework was easy because of the environment in which I grew up.

As a person who had religion stuffed into his young head—eventually rejecting it at age 13—I’ll say that HERETIC was a refreshing deconstruction. Grant’s performance=metal.
The film’s greatest stunt, though, was that it was fair to believers too. I mean, somebody had to take the booby prize home.

Listen, I want to make something good and goddamn clear regarding trump and his cult: If you’re a “no eye for an eye” person, a “turn the other cheek” person, or other comparable idiot, GET OFF MY FEED, NOW! You are not my friend.

Did people go soft on the nazis?

It’s no different in principle.

Oh, I hate his motherfucking guts. Make no mistake about that. You should, too. He’d see you or me dead or naked in the street first.
As for “owning”, who wants to own complete and worthless trash? Do you? Destroy M*GA!
Zero sanctimony here. 🖕

Same, but “Father’s Day” was funny too.

Never heard that until tonight. Probably made up by some bored, latte-addled trust fund baby with neurosyphilis.

Portmanteau? That’s a composite name for two people or things jammed together—i. e. Bennifer or Frankenchrist. I think the accurate term here is “anthology film”.
But since you asked, I’ll go with Creepshow (1982).

Brought to you by the same people who (not as subtly as they had wetdreamed) tried to pit Thomson Reuters against the Pentagon.

It’s like we “freaks” have a transferable appreciation for the terms “novel” and “sequel”.

Good, splatty fun, with a skein of imaginative kills—like the entire Final Destination franchise went full demonic overdrive. And all with that boutique King verve.
