I also cannot stress enough how if you're at all tinker-brained the experience of refining a linux distro to behave and look exactly the way you want it to is some of the most fulfilling "fun on the computer" type shit

which has been largely absent from Windows since 7!

form*

it's a pitch that's been made a million times by now but even though there are still plenty of programs that'll tether you to windows in some capacity, even using something like mint to browse the internet and do basic tasks will probably be a noticeable increase in quality of life from W11

yeah, that and the fact that you kind of have to marry a job if you wanna get the skills and level it up to competency.

I do really like Ichiban and the party! I'm hoping that IW will give me more to chew on with them, dunno when I'll start it but I'm eager to finish the main series up in a way

as an RPG I think it's okay but there's lots of room to improve, particularly with the job system and character balancing

as a narrative I think it's peaks and valleys, ichiban/arakawa scenes are often highlights, in contrast there are chapters of the midgame where things can get a bit languid

...against increasingly unfavorable odds that can be mitigated with mechanics that reward creativity, good roleplay, and teamwork, and suddenly leveling and powerscaling don't feel so sacrosanct in the soace imo

a lot of combat skills in rpgs (not even strictly dnd) come off strangely to me because a lot of players simply want what they want and having a prebuilt action doesn't really complement the way roleplay has changed over time. instead give them things that they must cleverly reinterpret...

it might seem like a immutable design to have characters that "improve" and expand the complexity of the game and in turn make better, chewier interactions but I think static characters or even ones that instead degrade in skill over time has a lot of potential

I'm not shocked by this to be clear, I think most people's visions of what an RPG even is revolves around characters that're weak and gain power w/ experience, but coupling that to an activity that needs the social contract to be executed perfectly over 5-10 sessions does reveal the quirks

idle RAM and CPU usage here compared to W11 is also crazy, you could run this like butter on a computer with 8GB still
December 17, 2025 at 2:26 AM
it's really hard to convince someone who's been raised on the windows environment to switch because there are so many fundamental differences that you /will/ have to address, but given how much bullshit you have to endure to make W11 functional nowadays, this is making a solid case for itself

oh I guess SteamOS counts too. I've been running CachyOS with plasma-kde so the experience between my deck and this has been very similar, which is good because I already enjoyed tinkering with it

fun brett fact but this isn't my first encounter with a linux distro, I had ubuntu for like at least a year back in the early 2010s because my computer upgraded to 8 and was literally unusable, so some of these things were softened by prior exposures

I'm beginning to think bayonetta 1 (PC) might be the least played video game ever made
