The entrance to the mine at Hamsteels colliery in 1939. The village of the same name was one of the few Category 'D' villages to be completely demolished. The site of the village is now an empty field. Image credited to John Parkin.

The 14th century Brancepeth Castle in County Durham. This view of the castle can only be seen on a tour as the front of the castle is relatively contemporary.

Old OS maps can be very detailed.

Looking in detail at an old OS map of Weardale I am increasingly curious about Bields and that they seem to have been around for a long time. They have a different structure to sheep folds.
