The simplest of surprises: I just checked a grocery bag from when I went shopping on Monday, and found I had bought a package of Mentos and forgot I had left it in the bag. Score!

Pet peeve: Data (usually YAML) formats where the items are in a list of dicts but uniquely keyed against one of the dict's elements. It means you can't use merge overrides (e.g. within Helm); in one case, rather than merge overrides, I have a Python script which builds a bunch of similar configs […]

If you're worried that someone might make a Kane & Lynch video game again, there's some good news: IO Interactive sold the rights to Square Enix when it went independent, and since then there have been about a dozen mergers, acquisitions and partial sell-offs of packages of franchises.

Point […]

Easter and Christmas are the only two days In-n-Out is closed. That means today is one of two days you can set up a monster truck show in the parking lot, completely legally.

Had an upset stomach today so I went out and got nachos which were about 50% jalapenos by weight, because I make excellent life choices.

Every day I make an iced coffee: 8 oz milk, 2 oz sweet cream, instant coffee, water, ice. The milk bottle is 64 oz, cream bottle is 32 oz, so in theory I should go though 2 milk bottles for every cream bottle.

In practice though... it actually still works? You would think there would be some […]

I accidentally found out this evening that Coachella simply livestreams everything, and randomly came across Missy Elliott's show, which just ended. It was fun! Production quality was on par with the Super Bowl except it was the same energy but for a full set. The dancers were excellent.

I should let the domain badidea.zip expire. Its joke has run its course (badidea.zip site gives you a badidea.zip file which contains an image of a QR code going to the badidea.zip site), and half the internet has (rightly) banned the .zip TLD.

Apple's launched a new line of Beats-branded USB cables. How do they stand out from the hundreds of USB cables you already own?

- Their strain relief is useless like all other Apple USB cables.
- They're $18.99.

They're running an ad campaign for these new USB cables […]

I swear this is a 100% true story, but I was in the kitchen, making lunch with the lights off. It was a little too dark so I smirked and said "Aziz, light!", at which point the kitchen lights turned on.

I actually have a home automation timer to turns on the lights at solar noon (the kitchen […]

You can still buy brand new USB adapters on Amazon which support SmartMedia, Memory Stick, CompactFlash, XD PictureCard, and Secure Digital (but not micro-SD, you'll need an adapter for that).

There was a 5.2 earthquake outside San Diego yesterday. It was initially measured as a 5.8 which triggered ShakeAlert, and I got a notification with about 20 seconds of preparation; the earthquake took about 40 seconds in total to reach me from the epicenter.

What actually arrived was minor […]

Protip: If your shell script needs to check if the command "foo" is available, don't use `which`, which is limited to files in $PATH. Instead do:

[ -n "$(command -v foo 2>/dev/null || true)" ]

`command -v` will check $PATH, aliases, built-ins, etc.

Brain: Hey
Me: ...
Brain: Hey
Me: Sigh, what do you want?
Brain: Velveeta Shells & Cheese's marketing message in the 90s was that Kraft Mac & Cheese is terrible.
Me: Okay?
Brain: Velveeta had been owned by Kraft for decades at that point.
Me: That's nice.

I know producers upload videos to YouTube hours/days ahead of a scheduled release time, and I'm all but certain YouTube uses that time to subtly get you ready for it.

For the last few days, YouTube had been recommending me random videos about gondolas and ski lifts, which I had no interest in […]
