Ich glaube, einige kundige Leute hatten das kommentiert mit: und so hat er dann auch gespielt.

Ideally after a player who specialized in assists rather than one of the great goal/assist double threats. So no Pele, Messi, Maradona or Cruyff, for example.

Michael Laudrup came to mind.

Sweden - Soviet Union 2-0, best match so far, Sweden deservedly progress but chances at either end, both goalkeepers shine, the Soviets lack a spark in attack, the Swedish attack looks like a well-honed unit

Best players: Gustavsson, Svensson, Hamrin, Yashin, Gren

Who would it be named after?

These were all the available group stage matches. We now enter the knockout phase.

Kudos to the Soviet broadcaster by the way. 90 mins of footage in a very decent quality is something you cannot take for granted during those days. In fact, sometimes you wonder just how poor the picture quality is.

Soviet Union - England 1-0, could have easily been the other way around, England have the better chances, Yashin starts wobbly but ultimately saves the day for the Soviets, Wright for once not imperious

Best players: Yashin, Brabrook, Howe, Ilyin

Sweden - Wales 0-0, Sweden are very unlucky not to score, they have more chances than Wales (who do have some), Skoglund likes some showboating - but he is also the most dangerous man on the pitch, Charles plays as a left-sided midfielder (???)

Best players: Skoglund

West Germany - Northern Ireland 2-2, 2nd NI goal is missing, NI a man down because of injury for most of the match, yet only the marginally worse team, pretty eventful match with chances at both ends

Best players: Gregg, Rahn, Seeler, McIlroy, Juskowiak, Walter

Sweden - Hungary 2-1, frantic 2nd half but Sweden better in the 1st, Tichy with the finest long-range strike I've seen in the 1950s, Liedholm with a rather bad penalty miss, Grosics and Bozsik the only remaing HUN legends

Best players: Hamrin, Tichy, Bozsik, Skoglund

It almost feels like a con. "The BIG MATCH.... *whisper* which doesn't matter all that much".

On a country-level the downfall of Hungarian football after the suppressed revolution of 1956 continues to be felt. The Hungarian lead is quickly shrinking and the '58 WC alone might be sufficient for Brazil to catch up.

However, the Hungarian exiles are said to prepare a comeback...

Let's just say that there aren't that many players from my 2010-20 Team of the Decade that will also feature prominently in the 2015-25 edition. ;-)

I see no good reason to view his performances as anything less than all-time great. I'm obviously on the somewhat lower end of the 'Ronaldo's historical standing' estimation but I do still judge him to be a Top 20, probably Top 10 player in football history. An all-time great, in other words.

I mean, judging individuals in a team sports will never be not complicated. But at the same time, I see no good reason to view individual contributions as some kind of black box that you can only estimate by the next-best-counterfactual (basically the same team but without him). We saw him play and

Looks like the race is on.

One aspect in which Di Stefano has already surpassed Messi in my books is consecutive Player of the Season titles. Di Stefano has now won four in a row (54-55 to 57-58) while Messi has never achieved more than three after another (16-17 to 18-19). Overall, Messi still leads 7-4, though.
October 27, 2025 at 4:26 PM
One thing that gets clear is that Di Stefano will at some point enter the GOAT debate in terms of my selections. He'll never reach Messi-levels but selections began when he was already 24.

Speaking of GOATs, we now enter a rare (unique?) stage in football history with two candidates active.

Doch, war er. Sogar noch ein bisschen expliziter als teilweise erste Anlaufstelle des Spielaufbaus aus der Abwehr, quasi wie ein Libero. Hat er nicht immer gemacht, aber manchmal.

I think his second half of the season, where he played as a false 9, was pretty good. Extremely mature, the kind of quality player that has a real influence on the major knockout ties.
