Had a great opportunity to tour the Judy Creek Experiment Station north of Whitecourt, AB yesterday! Started in the 90’s, Judy Creek has been used to evaluate different mixtures of spruce and aspen but now is used for a variety of studies

In August, Emmy and I packed up our stuff (and catnip) and moved to Edmonton, Alberta to start a PhD at UofA in the ecosystem-based forest management lab! Here’s to exploring assisted migration and stand dynamics!

After 1 year in the ground, the pines in my little assisted migration study here in NW Ohio saw 89% survival. We started with 510 trees of loblolly and short leaf pine. Between the deer and climate, we’ll see what happens in year 2!

After a year and a half of planning, this riparian forest buffer was finally planted! This field flooded too often to reliably crop it so we worked with the landowner to plant this 6.5 ac to trees. Can’t wait to see this in the next couple of decades!

Fusiform rust (Cronartium quercuum) gall on longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) releasing aesciospores. These spores will infect young oak leaves, which will eventually release basidiospores, which can infect pines.
