People definitely made jokes about Kirk. Not any notable elected Democrats, but they did. Gloating isn't even that unfair.
I didn't really see anyone seriously arguing his murderer shouldn't be arrested and imprisoned. There were no people going on TV arguing that.

Part of the cultural problem is that all of the enforcement jobs were centralized in a single org, which is then a magnet for the authoritarian types.
INS included both enforcement and the people responsible for granting citizenship. Not solely comprised of people who want to stop all immigrants!

From a growing small town area in NC where the downtown is thriving but they don't want to affect the character so the apartment complexes are being built in what used to be forest by the highway. Then they complain about that too.
