A shake-up of the dinosaur family tree! Rhabdodontids are not ornithopods. They are ceratopsians.

There were horned dinosaurs in Europe! As shown by a new fossil of Ajkaceratops from Hungary!

Check out our new study, led by @tweetisaurus.bsky.social ⤵️

Out in @nature.com today, we shake up the ornithischian family tree. Remember those weird Late Cretaceous iguanodontians, the rhabdodontids? Well they're weird because they aren't iguanodontians. They're ceratopsians. Well, at least some of them are... www.nature.com/articles/s41...
A hidden diversity of ceratopsian dinosaurs in Late Cretaceous Europe - Nature
New results indicate that rhabdodontids and the previously described Ajkaceratops are actually distinctive European ceratopsians, a group better known from Asia and North America.

New material of Ajkaceratops cements its identity as a ceratopsian, but adds a new wrinkle. It turns out that many european ornithischians previously classified as iguanodontians may actually be ceratopsians! New paper by @tweetisaurus.bsky.social et al., that I provided art for (link in reply).

Zoisite var. Tanzanite, watercolor on watercolor board. I feel this is possibly one of the best paintings I've ever done.

"nah, our modern day image of dinosaurs is boring and stupid"...

Finally finished this reconstruction of Iguanodon. Really proud of the final results. Gave it really pronounced shoulder scales with the idea that they'd help with protecting from the thumb claws in intraspecific combat.

Really moved out of my comfort zone with this piece, but I'm quite proud. Might have been my most difficult painting yet, since I had to get her face right, the detail and the lighting.

It was a pain, but a lot of fun.

Great news! Plesionectes longicollum is a new genus and species of plesiosaur from Holzmaden, Germany.

This paleoart features two Plesionectes hunting near a colony of Seirocrinus.

Following my last post, a reconstruction of a #struthiosaurid had to follow.

So, here you have my take on Struthiosaurus sp. from Pui in the #HategBasin (of course entirely based on S. austriacus and S. transylvanicus).

Now I may never draw an ankylosaur again... osteoderms and scales are pain.

Besides PaleoArt, I also go fossil-hunting from time to time, and one outcrop that I visit quite often is in the uppermost Muschelkalk, Middle Triassic.

Besides the brachiopod Coenothyris vulgaris and a single Ceratites cf. weyeri, there are barley any fossils there though.
I mainly went in the...
