Some good ways to access old memories while doing Legacy work

• Look at photos and videos
• Read old letters and documents
• Look at ephemera that you’ve kept, you kept it for a reason
• Play music from those times

Preserving old letters is one of the best ways to learn firsthand accounts from families and friends. I had letters sitting around for years and when I finally picked them up and read them, I was amazed at what I was able to learn about my family history.

Before I invest my time, energy and money and a new legacy service or product, I always like to check the mission statement of that company. Are legacy services and products the only thing this company produces or is it just a part of what they do?

One of the things I’ve discovered in my own legacy work is that it’s not just about exploring and recording one’s own family history, it’s also the understanding that all of us, are witnesses to remarkable periods of history and events. In that way, we all can contribute to our mutual history

Did you know that you can tell what year a print was made by some of the characteristics it has. For instance, scalloped edges of the print, like this one of my family on their Brighton Beach rooftop ( otherwise known as Tar Beach) were very popular in the 1940s.
