First of all do invest on drones, Ukraine showed us the way and what mainly misses is their production at industrial scale. And the training of soldiers: France's army just performed an ground exercise with the Emirate's, all with no drone, that's nonsense in our days.

Understood, the ships were coming back empty, except some fuel to make a nice explosion

They’re enough to shoot drones and missiles; and those old, possibly already decomissioned missiles are worth close to zero.
When they’re all finished, cheap laser-guided rockets should be used instead.

"Respond" doesn't mean they can deliver shortly in numbers. A handful maybe, which wouldn't make sense in terms of training and infra. But 50 Rafale yes, starting 2030.

They're used as spare part banks. Most were not modernized anyway.

Except that France has quite a lot of retired M2000. About 20-40 of 2000C and up to 100 of 2000D/N. Now having to support the planes in war time is something else.

The Mirage 2000 they have received are already multirole, better in a way than 2000-9 (probably, Hammer compatibility). Further progress would come with longer-range radar and A2A missiles.

The magnitude of the order shows that this is a longer term objective. Indeed, Rafale deliveries will take time and Gripen-E, F16V deliveries also take time.

Ce serait drôle dans 30 ans de voir les fans reconstruire, après les Dewoitine 520, des Mirage 4000.

This is a longer-term plan obviously. The current delivery delay for Rafale is 5 years.

Rafale it is ITAR free, unlike F16 and Gripen.
Plus, it is longer range, more powerful, and will work collaboratively. Then the F5 should be yet another workhorse and have a stealth drone.
