This week is #KinshipCareWeek, an opportunity to shine a light on the vital role of #KinshipCarers & the difference they make to the lives of children ❤️

Throughout the week, we'll be spotlighting our evidence on support for kinship carers, as well as the gaps in what we know 🔎
An image to promote Kinship Care Week. In the Centre of the image the text reads 'Kinship Care Week. 6-12 October 2025'. At the top of the image is a purple banner with text that reads 'celebrating kinship families, love and community'. At the bottom of the image is Kinship's logo. To the right of the logo is text that reads: 'For family or friends who step up to raise a child'.

3️⃣ We need to continue to fill gaps in the evidence. To improve understanding of how best to keep children safe, we'll soon be publishing findings from evaluations of recovery programmes for child victims of #DomesticAbuse, with plans to go further to find out what works 🔎

2️⃣ It's vital that we think local. We need to bridge the gap between research and reality - mobilising evidence in a way that recognises local circumstances, needs, and expertise 🤝

1️⃣ To deliver change for vulnerable children, we need to keep evidence use at the heart of decision making. We've seen the difference this can make in our work on #FamilyGroupConferences, with our landmark evidence informing the Children's Wellbeing & Schools Bill 📄

🗨️ "At Foundations our role is to ensure that these targeted services are evidence-based, and improve outcomes for the most vulnerable children – and the hard work is just getting started" – Dr Jo Casebourne

foundationsww.bsky.social
Vulnerable children need targeted services that deliver outcomes for them, so that they are and feel safer, have positive emotional wellbeing & are supported by their family networks – that's where Best Start Family Hubs come in 👩‍👩‍👦

On Education Sec Bridget Phillipson's ambition for children to be given the tools & opportunities to thrive: 🗨️ "Only when we start to shift the dial on outcomes for vulnerable children will we be able to truly say we’re making headway on the Opportunity Mission." – Dr Jo Casebourne

5/
foundationsww.bsky.social
This is also about reducing inequality. 🗨️ "By supporting parenting in families facing risks or disadvantage, we can narrow gaps in child development, ensuring every child—regardless of background—has the same chance to thrive." – Dr Jo Casebourne

4/
foundationsww.bsky.social
Children learn how to communicate, manage emotions, solve problems, and build relationships first and foremost at home 🏠 Early parenting support reduces the need for costly interventions later, saving resources and protecting children from harm.

foundationsww.bsky.social
Schools & childcare settings have an undeniable role in the Best Start in Life programme, but it is vital to remember that these settings can't improve outcomes on their own.🗨️ "Schools educate, but parents shape the conditions that make learning possible." – Dr Jo Casebourne

Our study indicates that #KinshipCare mediation has the potential to reduce conflict, improve communication & help families reach more stable arrangements.

💬 @wearecoram.bsky.social's Hannah Lawrence on the significance of this work

"Kinship families often face complex relationships and high levels of stress, particularly when tensions arise between kinship carers and birth parents. This study is a first step in establishing an evidence base for mediation for kinship families as an intervention that could reduce conflict, improve communication and support joint decision-making focused on the child’s best interests. With further development, this kind of approach could become a valuable part of the support available to kinship families across England." Hannah Lawrence, Senior Research Manager at Coram Centre for Impact
