Going to be trying out this historical knitting pattern once the yarn arrives! Wish me luck- historical patterns aren't the easiest to follow. 🥲

New antique! I recently bought this (damaged) antique 1850s dress and it's absolutely stunning. The fabric is gorgeous; so soft. It's entirely handsewn and features the beautiful 1850s silhouette I adore with its wide neckline and large bell skirt. Very happy to own this piece of history!

Some natural form beauty today! I think it's the most elegant era within Victorian fashion. The elongated bodies with mermaid's tail trains and the recently introduced princess line dress resulted in a beautiful few years.

A fashion plate from 1868. This was right at the beginning of the soft bustle era, when the fashion for piling one's skirts at the back of the dress and wearing an elliptical crinoline resulted in the first real bustle being worn. The era lasted into the mid 1870s.

The 1850s is my favourite fashion decade! I love the pagoda sleeves, the shape of the skirts, the flounced overskirts and the entire vibe. The Louis XV style which was revived in this decade is absolutely gorgeous, lending Georgian extravagance and pastels to the Victorian era.

In the 1890s when cycling became a popular pastime for women, radical dress (left) was one of the ways women would dress so they could cycle easily and still preserve modesty and femininity. Opinions on it were mixed- some thought it was a great idea; others said it looked ridiculous!

The early 19th century isn't my biggest interest, but I can't deny that fashion in that era was timelessly beautiful ✨

Girl's dress, 1860-1865, V&A museum.
Girl's dresses had higher hemlines than adult dresses, but were in many other ways a miniature version of what women would wear, often including light boning in the bodice. As the girl grew up, her hemline would lower steadily to the floor.

Dress, 1868-9, V&A museum.
I'm not typically a fan of the late 1860s silhouette, but this example is stunning! I think it's because the bustle is more toned down than was usual. The decoration on this is absolutely gorgeous; the sort of thing I'd definitely love to recreate someday.

Can anyone help solve this antique Victorian puzzle poem from 1896? 🤔
It's proven to be quite a challenge!
There's prize money involved... We've only missed the deadline by over a century 🫣

1869 Victorian antique sampler!
Little girls would make these to practice their sewing.
This example was made by a girl named Blanche Brown Dunsfold, aged 7.

Antique 1830s fan! It's made of bone and feather and the original ribbon is still intact. I love to own little pieces of history like this.

I never used to like the 1880s, but the period is definitely growing on me! The bustle lends itself much better to the more 'plain' (if you can call it that... it's still lovely, as all historical fashion is, but in comparison to earlier decades it's plain) style of the 1880s rather than the 1870s

Some antique photos in my collection! I'm a particular fan for the second one, which has the writing 'Clara, 19' on the back. Interesting to think about how much older people looked in the past 😌 People say that about teenagers in the 1980s too but clearly the effect was still around in the 1880s 😯

Skirt I made! I did the main construction by machine then all the pleating & waistband attachment was done by hand. I love the cartridge pleating technique; it reduces so much fabric to the waist size which creates a really flowy lovely skirt. I also love how neat this technique is :)

My favourite painting! Empress Eugenie surrounded by her ladies in waiting by Franz Xaver Winterhalter in 1855. I think it's a gorgeous example of 1850s fashion and I love Winterhalter's work in general.
