TSN only has regional rights to 3.5 teams. So, it's about not breaching their NHL contract.

Soccer was always underserved by TSN/SN. 50% of Canada M/W matches weren't shown over 30 yrs. TSN only started showing Champions League in 2015. It's why it was first sport to go streaming in Canada. And why today 90% of soccer shown in Canada are on streaming services.

Majority of rights for WTA events are held by DAZN Canada.

It's allowed but very few do it as only can say name of drug or say what it does. Nearly all go with naming drug. So, most ads currently are for GLP drugs.

World Championship is IIHF's largest revenue driver via media, sponsors and tickets. WJC is 2nd but IIHF only gets a fee from host nation and usually only large when Canada hosts.

Been geoblocked since last season. But Youtube is easy to bypass with even free VPNs.
PWHL tells you fairly clearly where games are. 54 on TSN, 30 on SN, 19 on Prime and 17 on CBC.
January 3, 2026 at 6:37 PM
Thursday isn't a designated day for SN to carry Cdn team games nationally. Though, NHL deal should have made exception for New Year's Day.

That's more because NHL sells national and regional rights because of high inventory and high demand in Canada. NFL only sells national rights and Canada isn't their primary market.
December 19, 2025 at 4:47 PM
There are also games on Big 10 network. DAZN shows games shown on Fox Sports networks.
December 15, 2025 at 7:59 PM
You can legally watch it via SN+ Premium or NHL Centre Ice. NHL makes more money splitting rights nationally & regionally. Same done by NBA and MLB.

MLS playoffs were availble to any Apple TV sub. MLS went with Apple since they paid 2x more & isn't losing World Series or SC level viewers. Top 2 MLS Cup tv audience was in the 90s. Regular season tv numbers were flat to down over 30 years. MLS isn't a top 3 watched football league in US or Canada.

90% of soccer shown in Canada isn't on TSN/SN. It's been this way for about 7 years. Even TSN/SN show most of their limited soccer properties on their streaming service rather than their linear channels.
November 23, 2025 at 3:20 PM
TSN/SN do have a strangle hold. But NHL blackouts are due to NHL selling rights nationally and regionally. This season, you can see over 40% of Leafs games nationally on SN. Another 6 are nationally on Prime.

To move to the next level, NSL will eventually need somebody to pay for at least some matches since CBC/TSN don't pay for $3m/yr+ production costs and for rights. After Olympics, CBC has no sports budget left. Ex CFL, TSN doesn't pay for any Cdn league production or rights.

759k on TVA Sports. G6 was higher at 786k.
November 3, 2025 at 10:19 PM
It's less than 25% of Super Bowl audience on American tv. It is more in line with big NFL games as it is just outside the top 5 NFL tv audiences produced so far this season.

All good ex Tennis Canada owns the Cdn Open. It's their main revenue generator. Rogers is presenting sponsor & English broadcaster.

TSN/SN never paid rights for 30 years & didn't show 50% of friendlies/early WCQs. It's because audience was too small as majority of matches were on weekdays, vs Concacaf minnows or middling women's teams. And because liitle to no Canada Soccer sponsors bought ad time.
October 31, 2025 at 3:05 AM
As with other Cdn leagues ex CFL, TSN doesn't pay for production/rights. TSN never paid Canada Soccer before OneSoccer took over.
Weekly CPL & 3 Voyageurs matches along with free ad time for CPL/Canada Soccer sponsors were exchanged for rights to men friendlies, Nations League Finals and Gold Cup.

TV hasn't really built MLS fanbase. US tv numbers were flat for 30 yrs. Caps season never averaged >80k on TSN. Pre-Apple TV, MLS wasn't a top 2 most watched soccer league in US or Canada. Tier 1 Rogers tv plan subs now get Apple TV for free. Playoffs are free for Apple TV subs.
October 27, 2025 at 3:41 PM
MLS reported a global audience number but it's higher than 198k average for Fox/FS1 in 2022. But lower than 343k ESPN 2022 average. TSN season average for the 3 Cdn team matches were never above 100k.
October 24, 2025 at 9:07 PM
People watch highlights online. MLS didn't attract too many casual tv viewers as ratings were largely flat for 30 years and eclipsed by the Prem. Since Apple deal, attendance up 12%, ticket revenue hit all time high this year and social media engagement outpacing all other major US leagues.
October 24, 2025 at 8:58 PM
For Canada, DAZN holds most of the rights for WTA. TSN only bought rights to about 10 marquee WTA events.
October 21, 2025 at 1:07 AM
Bell's F1 deal is independent of ESPN. Bell has held rights since 1992 while ESPN had a 20 yr gap between 1984-2025. But if Apple is interested in Canada, they can easily outbid Bell when rights are up for renewal.
October 18, 2025 at 3:07 PM
It interferes with NHL's fortunes since they sell rights nationally and regionally. No reason for Rogers to pay 2x more for rights if TSN can show Habs games out-of-market. It also interferes with Rogers selling out-of-market SN+ Premium package.
