"She has her own apartment in Miami, and she does TikToks where she opens her Keurig and does it all," Gay tells me back in the car. "The other day, she said she was in her 'tradwife era' And I was like, 'What?! This is the thing I tried to get away from!'" She bangs on the steering wheel for emphasis. Gay's mother was the ultimate worthy Mormon woman before any of it was monetizable: "She was an artist. She walked in snow in the blizzard of '82 to pull home a dollhouse that she had hidden at a friend's house for Christmas so that we six kids wouldn't find it. Her friends were doing the same thing. And I wasn't a mom, so I didn't understand the backbreaking work behind that type of curation."

Also, I wrote that Miami story more than two years ago. It seems almost hilarious to me now, but I actually wrote a story that was like "LOL Miami, they're selling real estate in a town threatened by sea level rise" without realizing that I lived in and owned a home in a place that was equally climate-challenged. I knew this intellectually, but it hadn't seeped in. That Miami story was funny. I couldn't write a funny story about climate change now to save my life. But the Miami story is everyone's favorite. Everyone wants something like it, and it makes me feel sad for so many reasons, mostly because when I wrote it I was a much happier person and I miss her, she was a lot of fun, even if she was an idiot.

One of the first agencies the Trump administration attempted to dismantle is the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). While at first it was unclear why Musk and DOGE had their sights set on eliminating an agency focused on foreign aid, recent reports have shed light on Musk's connection with USAID. In May 2024, the USAID inspector general announced it was investigating USAID's relationship with Starlink (a subsidiary of SpaceX), which it had paid to provide internet services to Ukraine civilians. While the details of the investigation are not public, there is evidence Russia had access to Starlink, which was not supposed to be possible. However, the investigation will likely be dropped as the Trump administration moves forward with shutting down USAID. There isn't any concrete context given on what specifically is not working in the current mode of operation at Microsoft, just the general notion that everyone at the company needs to do better in these unprecedented times. Aside from the key thing about Nadella making way to Althoff, it's pretty shallow. Here's how the internal memo ends: - This will also allow our engineering leaders and me to be laser focused on our highest ambition technical work-across our datacenter buildout, systems architecture, Al science, and product innovation -to lead with intensity and pace in this generational platform shift. Each one of us needs to be at our very best in terms of rapidly learning new skills, adopting new ways to work, and staying close to the metal to drive innovation across the entire stack!!
