I’ve seen takes on it that I have no idea how people got, this is, unfortunately, not one of those.

I entirely understand how someone could come away from the series with a take similar to yours, I’ve just seen enough of the series to know that it goes in a different direction.

If you don't mind spoilers I can explain more but, coming from someone who has read the novels, Springsteen's take is funny because it's close to the opposite of the series' actual messaging.

If it makes you feel better, the main character literally stares at the screen at says she's a villain... in episode 1... like halfway through. It's a story with an explicit villain protagonist and the church is absolutely not a "good institution" as Springsteen put it.
