My first lesson in #thesisintobook project. Don’t work from the thesis because you get stuck wondering, with apologies to The Clash, should it stay or should it go. Instead I’ve found it liberating to write a summary of the book I want to write. Thanks for the support @catherinejampel.bsky.social

Deeply shocked to learn of the sudden passing of brilliant human rights academic and champion @conorgearty.bsky.social I only bumped into him on Monday striding up Kentish Town Road with his lovely young daughters. As we walked together he exuded his trademark wit, warmth and charm. Such a loss

Getting a lot out of @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social’s excellent Reconsidering Reparations on the train from London to Inverness. But no tea or coffee for 8 hours as the water heater has broken down

My thesis to book journey starts with @lportwoodstacer.bsky.social at Manuscript Works who provide materials, courses & supportive yet robust advice on how to get going. I have found this incredibly useful. ‘Developmental editing’ involves review & advice on thesis shakedown & reconstruction.

Post PhD you’ll have between 80,000 - 100,000 words closely and critically read by perhaps only four people (your supervisors and examiners). You want to get your argument out in the world knowing that publishers need a text which will attract more readers than that. Where to start?
