Had a great time presenting my poster exploring people's thoughts & feelings about death w/ #BERTopic this evening at the Society for Research in Psychopathology Annual Meeting! Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat– it was wonderful learning more about others' work and nerding out! 💀🪦

I called the phone number listed on their site and was directed by an automated message to email [email protected]— I sent them an email and it didn’t bounce so that might be worth a try!

I reply here to Mickey Inzlicht’s critique of our assessment of the TMT literature -led by former grad students, Lihan Chen and Rachele Benjamin. We consider the question of how can we best evaluate a literature and, judging from his critique, reach a controversial conclusion.

Last week I declared the social psychology of death officially dead.

(5/6) This reveals a striking dimension of emotion regulation: that many adolescents sometimes engage in self-destructive behaviors not to escape negative emotions, but to amplify them. Implications for these findings can be found in our manuscript.

(4/6) We found that: (1) contra-hedonic functions are not just present but prevalent, (2) contra-hedonic functions are most common for NSSI, and (3) contra-hedonic functions are consistently associated with a desire to self-punish.
Figure 1: Stacked bar charts showing frequency of endorsement of contra-hedonic functions of restrictive eating, binge eating, purging, and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI).

(3/6)...*pro*-hedonic motivations for these behaviors- i.e., how people use them to feel *better.* However, we were curious if people ever use these behaviors to feel *worse* given that even healthy people voluntarily pursue activities that induce negative emotions.

(2/6) Usually we think of people as being motivated to feel good- in research, practice & everyday life. But we know that people also do things to feel bad- like listening to sad music/watching scary movies.

Historically, explanations of NSSI & ED behaviors have only examined...

(1/6) New pre-print alert! 🤩🚨

We provide new evidence for contra-hedonic functions of NSSI & ED behaviors in adolescents.

Check out our new paper "Before the attempt: How people think and plan in suicide crises."

We characterized contemplation & planning in suicide crises, and identified factors that related to classification in the attempt group (vs. a plan-only group).
