Ultimately, these abuses are a major part of the legacy of the Qatar World Cup. And Abdullah’s insights are very valuable as Saudi Arabia appears to apply the same strategy when confronted with similar rights abuses ahead of the 2034 World Cup.

🚨In December of 2021, his sentenced was upheld but its length reduced. Abdullah has explained how he was physically assaulted, exposed to very low temperatures and deprived of sleep.

👨🏽‍⚖️Some months later (April) he was sentenced to five years in prison. Abdullah appealed, and he wasn’t arrested until November when he had an appointment to be interviewed by NRK.

⚖️He was released on bail, in December of 2019. In January of 2021, his trial began, a process marred by irregularities, as his right to legal defense was severely hampered.

⛓️Abdullah’s employers wanted him to put a positive spin on the issue (as Josimar has repeatedly covered). When he refused, he was first removed from his position, before he was arrested some time after.

On 21 August 2025, Saudi authorities executed Jalal Labbad, another young man sentenced to death for alleged crimes he committed as a child, raising serious fears for Abdullah al-Derazi.

Abdullah, part of the Shia minority, was convicted and sentenced to death for his alleged participation in violent attacks and possession of illegal weapons during anti-gov. protests in 2011 + 2012 after a grossly unfair trial that relied on a torture-tainted “confession”.

Instead of including information about local rules and context in its risk assessment, it deferred to national authorities and ignored these abuses. And then proceeded to award France with the 2030 Winter Olympics.
