October Movie 7:
The Town That Dreaded Sundown

Sequel (of sorts)/reboot that doesn’t hold a candle to the original. Tacky, hollow, and flavorless. Every choice is a bad one, and the shallow desperation to rip off Scream is especially irksome. Feh.
Grade: D+

Gritty true crime vibe, with a few intense sequences amplified by a vibe of docudrama authenticity. Some comic relief bits distract, but they’re not too bad. Strengthened by its ambiguity and period setting. Grade: B

Halloween-fest Movie 5:
V/H/S/Halloween

Five often flawed entries and a decent framing sequence don’t showcase the best work in the franchise. There are no standouts, nothing sings. It’s…fine enough, but these folks need story editors. (I’m available.) Grade: B-

Halloween-fest Movie 4: Bring Her Back

A slow-burn supernatural thriller that’s (intentionally) frustrating at times, but nevertheless unsettling and surprisingly emotional. Worth the time (unless you’re squeamish about kids in danger because ooooh, boy!). Grade: B+
