Mom had watched some humans behaving strangely in the park. They stood around in a circle, raised their featherless wings over their heads, or unfolded little mats on which they lay or crawled around. Standing on one leg and saying hello to the sun was part of the drill, which they called Yogowl.

Whenever an Owlet was in distress, or a sweet Owlette needed a knight in shiny plumage to save her from an evil Horned Owl or Eagle-Owl, SuperOwlfred was near. SuperOwlfred would fly in as swift as a Hawk, as silent as an Earthworm, and come to the rescue.He also delivered hot meals, e.g. vole stew.

Mr and Mrs Fowler were not xenophobic, not in the least. But new neighbors called for extra scrutiny. It was necessary to know who this family with four (noisy! and spoilt!) chicks were that had moved in next door. Just in the event that one had to call the powlice one day.

It was 3 on sunday morning when Mom positioned herself in the Burrow entrance. Owlexander, Owlgernon and Owliver had promised - no, sworn - they'd be home by 11 at the latest. Mom was grimly looking forward to their booze-inspired excuses.

Owliver was fascinated by all Owls' ancestors, the Dinowlsaurs. Some of them, like Great-Grandad Stegowlsaurus, wore plates on their backs to defend themselves, or to regulate their body temperature, or because they thought plates were cool. Owliver wondered what they would look like on him.

Sandra, Sabrina, Sandor, Samuel, Sarah & Samantha were practising their famous Formation Flight for Sandhill Air Show. Things went well enough: after merely 2 hours, they agreed on which direction to go. "But if you don't keep your bl***y feathers out of my eyes, I'll forget myself", Sarah told Sam.

Owlga and Owlgy didn't know what to make of the bit about calves as Calves were Cowlets not Owlets. They decided to present their legs instead which, they agreed, represented their whole personality in the best possible way. 2/2

Owlga and Owlgernon had read an article in a magazine from the 1950s, which contained useful advice "how to attract a person you fancy". No. 1: Looking coolly over your shoulder makes you appear mysterious and fascinating. No. 2: Present your shapely calves without being too obvious about it. 1/2

Encouraged by Owlga's new shop, Owlgenia started one of her own: a Featherdresser's. The molting season should increase the demand, she figured. It was unfortunate, however, that she herself fell victim to this condition. Unperturbed,she decided to brand her loss of feathers as New Modowlnist Style.

After hundreds of Owls had told Owlena how pretty and twee she was, she applied for the World's Cutest Owlet Contest. Posing big-eyed for extra sweet photos, she suddenly wondered whether cute was what she wanted to be. Things like self-confident,cool or even intelligent might have their merits too.

Grandma and Grandad were very proud of their little Granny Burrow. Their own Burrow-digging days lay behind them, so it was extra nice of the humans to provide a humble home for pensionowls. "Well, a bit TOO humble", Grandma mumbled. "They forgot to add an underground pool and gym. "
