We needed a larger gusset than all the ones we have to connect two pieces of 1 x 2 tubing. So we designed one, and are having an alumnus water jet it for us for cost of materials only. #FIRSTRoboticsCompetition #REEFscape

Aren't our yellow chassis sides pretty? #FIRSTRoboticsCompetition #REEFscape

We have just about figured out our mechanisms and will be ready to start fabricating by next week.

Whoo hoo! A Kracken, a NEO Vortex, AND two Spark Max controllers! Didn't think this would happen and am happily surprised!

Kickoff is getting closer...

And cue the "Inverse Time Law" ----- as the number of hours left until an event decreases, the apparent length of each hour increases.

Progress was made on the battery charging station. It needs one more shelf, a handle, and wheels. It will be painted over holiday break.

It's done. We are no longer on the musky place.

The students designed a new Battery Charging Station (made from the wood from our dismantled Charged Up Charging Station). They first sketched out ideas on a white board, then made hand drawings, and then a CAD drawing. They cut the wood and assembled. Not quite finished yet. Stay tuned!

On Nov. 4 we were visited by a Global Ties: Hidden No More group of women in STEM from several countries. They visited the robot lab and then were given a tour of the school by our team.

In early November we participated in the FIRST booth at the Huntsville STEAMfest. We let participants drive our robot around in a marked off area. The motors on the swerve were programmed for <25% speed for safety.

On Oct.30 we participated in the Trunk or Treat held in the school's competition gym. The event had many booths set up and lots and lots of littles coming around for candy. We ran out. Next year we'll bring more.

Here is the end result of the printer stand the students designed and built. Now people passing by in the hallway can see the printer when it's running.

We have a new Prusa 3D printer and want to display it in the window facing the hall so the school student population can see the printer working. To do that we needed to elevate it about a foot. Students designed the box to not only hold the printer, but with storage space underneath.

Two new students figure out how to use ratchet wrenches and the difference between the screw head and the nut side tools. Letting them figure it out themselves after being briefly shown how to use the tools earlier helps them learn better.

We have gotten so much done so far this semester, but as you can see, we have so much left to do! #FIRSTRoboticsCompetition #Reefscape
October 18, 2024 at 1:58 PM
Guess what we're about to start making? We "only" need 500 this season.
October 18, 2024 at 1:55 PM
The team is still in the process of getting everyone registered and passing their safety activities. Even veteran students have to take all the safety quizzes again. Once they pass they may then work on the robot or other projects. #FIRSTRoboticsCompetition

Test run for our freshly assembled Prusa. Impressive print quality compared to the old makerbot z18s we have. Now to load updated slicers to our even older desktop computers. School has blocked GitHub so we have to load via flash drives.

Students from Brazilian Team 5800 Magic Island Robotics trying out our robot. They are the students in the black shirts. Ours are chilling on the sofa. We use this classroom for driving practice because we have no better place. Carpet is find so far. 😜 #GraciousProfessionalism #FIRSTRobotics

Last April, in the days leading up to the Rocket City Regional we hosted Team 5800 Magic Island Robotics from Brazil. They need a place to work on their robot so we graciously offered to share our lab, batteries, and other materials to get their robot in driving shape. #GraciousProfessionalism

In August local organizations hold a Back To School/Celebrating Education parade and festival. We decorated a utility trailer and participated in the 1.25 mile long parade. We start out in a Dollar General parking lot and end up at the school. There is a festival afterwards.

We want to make a running CyberJag for a new poster with our motto on it. Chasing Success One Match At A Time. We need a jaguar image that we can change into a partially robotic animal for the poster. So we are tracing the outline of a running jag to get started. More to come!
