There was also a time when films (and other creative works) had to have the copyright explicitly renewed so if someone didn't renew then the copyright lapsed, that might explain some of the newer works appearing

I would have thought the US army Warner Brothers cartoons with Bugs Bunny and the like would be in there

I know for "Charade" they didn't have the correct copyright statement on the film, so it was immediately public domain.
