Saying you need to use a real knife to be "authentic" in theatre is so painfully stupid. Authentic to what? None of what you are doing is real. I say this as a person who has worked as a profession theatre props technician for over 10 years. I'm surprised there wasn't a criminal investigation here.

Intentionally killing wounded survivors of an already illegal attack is just that much more of a war crime.
