WARNING: We heard Keir Starmer is reviewing Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects our freedom from torture.

Chipping away at this vital protection risks setting in train the destruction of the ban on torture which Britain helped forge & champion over centuries.

“These proposals are cruel and futile. Abolishing indefinite leave to remain and forcing people to reapply for a visa every five years would punish survivors who have already endured so much,” Sile Reynolds, head of asylum advocacy, Freedom from Torture - Big Issue. www.bigissue.com/news/politic...
Reform UK's plan to ban benefits for migrants is 'an attack on the backbone of Britain'
Nigel Farage has pledged to abolish independent leave to remain status, as well as limiting benefits and welfare to UK citizens only.

The Home Secretary said she would "challenge any last-minute, vexatious attempts" to stop removals to France.

These suspicions are just wrong.

If the gov cares about justice, it must build an asylum system based on safety, compassion & access to legal support

Reform UK recently announced they’d be willing to work with the Taliban to deport people to Afghanistan, putting lives of torture survivors at serious risk.

But thousands of you said, ‘not in my name’, adding your voice to make sure no politician can ever send someone back to their torturers.

As Donald Trump continues his state visit in the UK, today and every day we say no to cruelty, hate and division.

Trump’s complete disregard for human rights has shown that we must be loud and clear: torture is always wrong. No exceptions.

States have a legal duty to prevent torture and prevent genocide.

The UK government must lead by example and do everything in its power to do exactly this - and ensure that all perpetrators are held to account.

Justice for survivors depends on this.

Torture tries to destroy lives. The impacts are devastating and long-lasting. This must stop.

Torture is never, ever permitted. Not in war, not in retaliation, not ever.

A UN inquiry has described serious harm to Palestinian detainees since 7 October 2023, including torture, rape and sexual assault, as contributing to its conclusion that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

While torture continues, survivors will find a way to come here seeking safety, because reuniting with family and community in the UK is central to their recovery.

This scheme is a betrayal of the Government’s promise to preserve access to refugee protection in this country.

Next week the Government will begin returning people to France under its ‘one in, one out’ scheme.

This scheme involves refugees being detained on arrival, causing unimaginable harm to people who have survived torture in prisons and en route.

Last week the government suspended new refugee family reunion applications.

This devastating move will deny family life to refugees. It will simply punish those who have already suffered.

The Home Secretary must restore refugee family reunion rights and build strong communities.

BREAKING: Shabana Mahmood is expected to announce the use of military barracks to house people seeking safety.

But housing torture survivors in barracks risks reopening deep wounds.

The solution to asylum housing is simple: make fast & fair asylum decisions so survivors can rebuild their lives.

📍Near Reform’s party conference in Birmingham

No politician should be trying to send torture survivors back to their torturers. Least of all the Taliban.

For centuries, Britain has protected people fleeing torture. Sending people back to their torturers is NOT who we are as a country.

🚨 Nigel Farage is in Birmingham today, where he'll be talking about Reform's plans to try to send torture survivors into the arms of their torturers.

So here's a new billboard to show who has come out to back his new plan.

Most people in the UK are caring and they believe in the importance of protecting people fleeing war and torture.

The Government has committed to rebuilding a just asylum system that respects human dignity and the rule of law, and that's what they should continue to do.

We know from the survivors we work with that punitive policies won’t stop people from seeking safety on our shores.

While this pilot offers a pathway to safety for some, it relies on the brutal mass detention of others. And detention can play no part in a fair & compassionate system.
freedomfromtorture.bsky.social
3. If this scheme ‘succeeds’, not only will this Government be responsible for harm in detention, but even more refugees will be pushed into more dangerous and exploitative journeys as they continue, against the odds, to seek sanctuary from war and torture & to rejoin family and friends in the UK.
freedomfromtorture.bsky.social
2. While offering a route to safety for very few refugees, it relies upon the mandatory detention of survivors of torture and persecution.

Any period of detention is profoundly harmful for someone who has endured torture.
