Well, now I feel dumb *and* disappointed.

Is it weird that the first thing I noticed was that this slide came from LaTeX/Beamer? I'll let my confirmation bias treat this as evidence that WYSIWYG tools haven't taken over academia.

If these allegations are true then obviously the authors of these papers should be held accountable. But what about the journals in which they were published? Shouldn't they bear some responsibility when images were "clumsily rotated or stretched in Photoshop"? Is the bar that low for some journals?
