Designed by Mike Moody.Free SpaceFree Space * * * ## Recent Interview ## Weekend Recommendations! ### _Sorry To Bother You_ - _Free on Kanopy_ Boots Riley just dropped the stylish trailer for _I Love Boosters_ on us. But, his landmark entry from 2018 is streaming free on Kanopy. **_This one is for the grown ups!_** LaKeith Stanfield is Cassius Green. A down on his luck salaryman who discovers a secret way to get ahead. What follows is an uproarious satire of United States business culture, capitalism at large, and how Black people have to navigate hostile environment. Don’t want to give anything away, but this one is a doozy. A personal Aaron favorite that prompted a genuine smile when I discovered it was streaming free. Kanopy describes this wild ride: “In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, broke telemarketer Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) skyrockets to success after adopting a magical “white voice,” drawing him into a twisted corporate world of greed and exploitation. As his girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson) leads a growing resistance, Cassius must choose between selling out and speaking up.” * * * ### _It Takes Two_ - _Streaming on Pluto TV_ & _YouTube_ Phase Hero fans, I finally had Jamie Jirak on the show. She talked about this underrated Mary-Kate & Ashley gem. It Takes Two stars Kirstie Alley and Steve Guttenberg as well. This is, as Jamie called it, a Parent Trap-a-like. But, when the formula is working well, it’s a real delight. This movie really has a lot of joy in it. When we talk about the twins, it’s usually in the confines of their popular VHS empire. However, it’s important to not they’re more than just that gimmick. Although, we’re deep in that particular well with It Takes Two. YouTube introduces us to the plot: “Two identical girls have lived very different lives. The outspoken Amanda has been moving from foster home to foster home, while the quiet refined Alyssa has been raised in a world of privilege and luxury. Amanda faces adoption and the loss of Diana, her loving social worker. Alyssa faces losing her father, Roger, to an opportunistic fiancee. The two girls swap identities in a plan to bring Roger and Diana closer together..” * * * ### _Nova_ “Can Dogs Talk?” - _Streaming on PBS_ Friends, I know you’ve seen the social media videos. You know the ones. A dog wants to eat or go outside and strides over to a series of multicolored buttons. From there, it’s social media catnip. Nova’s latest episode, “Can Dogs Talk?” aims to give us a bit more insight on the strange phenomenon of these smart pups. Scientists investigate the phenomenon and give us their read on “talking dogs.” The woman of the house loves these videos, so you can bet we’ll be on the case! New York Public Media explains: “**Can dogs** understand what we say—and **talk** back? Christopher Guest directs an All-Star team consisting of O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Rachel Harris and more. (Seriously the cast list alone pushes A Mighty Wind to the front. Can’t say enough about this effort from Christpher Guest. A film that wonders about stardom, voice and spectacle on a smaller scale. All without ever forgetting the weird little interactions that keep a show going. Also known as Paydirt, the film pairs Jeff Daniels and Catherine O’Hara with a wealth of talented performers. Folks, this one is about as 1992 or so as they come. Bill Phillips hands a comedy stuffed to the brim with scenarios about as well as you’d expect. But, the real charm here is seeing the two leads play off of each other. Hoopla gives us the chance to revisit some fun stuff.</p><p>Check out a short synopsis for the film! “In this all-star treasure hunt comedy, a prison psychiatrist finds out from a dying patient the location of 8-1/2 million dollars, buried deep beneath the house of an attractive single woman. Maurice Sendak’s seminal children’s book provides the source material. Ms. O’Hara plays Judith in this one. She would end up doing a lot of voice work as the years went on. (Despite it not being free right now, The Wild Robot? She’s excellent as a mother in that film!) Jonze is at his best when there’s some dreamlike shenanigans afoot. This kind of whimsy just feels good.</p><p>Check out what we’re working with: “Feeling misunderstood at home and at school, mischievous Max (Max Records) escapes to the land of the Wild Things, majestic -- and sometimes fierce -- creatures. They allow Max to become their leader, and he promises to create a kingdom where everyone will be happy. While we cover massive streamers like Pluto TV and Tubi, this week we’re showing PBS some love. **_(Free Subscribers get these guides direct to inbox every week!)_** A news story broke this week about the Corporation for Public Broadcasting shutting down. While that’s a bummer, as PBS and NPR used that organization to direct funding. We'd like to share some good news: **_PBS isn’t gone!_** > @pbs > > EXPLAINER: Are we dead? No. Is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) dead? Yes. The CPB board has voted this week to dissolve the organization after Congress voted last year to end federal funding for PBS and NPR. The CPB was created by Congress in 1967 as a means to distribute federal funds to over 1,500 local public media stations. PBS the brand will continue to serve our mission of providing high-quality educational and entertainment programming that fosters lifelong learning. We will also continue to support the local stations that make up the public media system. Local stations get funds from members, fundraisers, grants, and, until now, the CPB. PBS gets funding from station dues as well as grants, donations, and other sources. PBS, NPR, and all local stations are adjusting to reduced budgets moving forward. The best way you can help is to support your local stations directly 💙 > > ♬ original sound - user In fact, your local station needs more help than ever. Your Login is going to give you access to both Pbs.org and the PBS app. If you want to use PBS Passport, which gives you some extended offerings for $5 a month, that option is there for you too. But really, like any other streaming service the account allows you to have a watch list, access to your viewing history, and the ability to favorite shows so that you can know exactly when they come back for a new season! * **Type your first name into the appropriate field and then in the last name field go ahead and fill out your last name.** * **Then we head down to the email field, type your email address. Now, your email address acts as the username for your PBS account.** * **Down in the password field, we're gonna make a personal password that has at least eight characters using letters and numbers. There is a helpful show password option available on the right side to let you know which characters you're entering.** * **Once that's all settled, go ahead and check the box to confirm your acceptance of the privacy policy and the terms of use.** * **If all of the above fields are properly filled out, click the Create Account button to make it all official. This completes your account set up. If anything was left incomplete or otherwise shows incorrect a dialog box will pop up informing you how to correct it.** It’s important to note, you’ll be able to tell what shows are available to stream for free by paying attention to the thumbnails in the app. PBS Passport videos have a little compass icon in the top left corner of their thumbnails. (Shown down below!) If you want to get the app on your television, the easiest way to do that is to _activate your device through a code from the PBS app_ on your phone. This helpful little video on PBS Help’s Youtube channel helps explain that process. If you've ever had to log in to a cable-based streamer, or use your phone to log into something like Disney Plus or HBO Max on a Roku or Fire TV for the first time, you probably understand this. But it's good to have this for beginners. * * * **Now, we’re going to dive into the offerings for this week on the streamer.** As a reminder, our podcast is available on a bunch of different platforms. That made this documentary from Twin Cities PBS an Instant Pick. The Electric Indian follows Henry Bucha, native hockey legend and his career all the way through the Olympics. There are so many stories in the world of sport that resonate with me.
