Amendment 130 has now been renamed 'Amendment 40' for tomorrow's debate. Here is our updated letter: freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/app/uploads/...

Through the Freshwater Network we're protecting the best remaining habitats where threatened freshwater species are still hanging on. From there we can build out to create a network of high-quality freshwater habitats, giving freshwater wildlife the best chance to recover and thrive into the future.

The message is clear: we need a new approach to the recovery of freshwater species.

On the new Red List, just 5% of freshwater plants have a reduced threat status - it’s a small start, but we know we can still turn things around.

The results look bleak for freshwater plants, but our research and conservation work has shown time and time again that we can halt and reverse species decline by protecting the best sites for freshwater wildlife, creating new, clean water habitats and working at landscape scale.

Their decline is due to habitats becoming more degraded and fragmented – or lost altogether - as well as changing land use and pollution.

31 wetland plant species are new on the list, and 91 species have an increased level of threat since the last review.
November 7, 2025 at 10:24 AM
A third of all freshwater and wetland plant species have now been assigned to one of four threat categories – Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable or Near Threatened – due to declines in population or range.

We urge Peers to support Amendment 130, which would ensure that EDPs can only be used to address diffuse development impacts - such as on water quantity, water quality and air quality.
