Those things are all over ‘round here.” Deih scrunched her nose, keeping her eyes locked on the ones of stone peeking out at her from behind a veil of dewey holly leaves. Tyea was right. It was not a little gremlin, but instead the carved image of a round man, his eyes protruding from a strange smooth helmet. Tyea clicked his tongue and the horse trotted on. “Remember when I first came to Nian?” Deih jerked her head back to him. That had been ages ago, before her father died. About eight years? Tyea glanced back at her before continuing. “I was traveling with Mother Hewm. You probably don’t remember her. Anyway, we saw some of those weird carvings back then. She said they’re older than you could imagine, older than the ascension. Might be from a people who lived here before our kind came to Aaldeva.” He grew silent for a moment. “She made me give offerings to the ones we found. Treated it like a little game, though. I don’t think she took them seriously. And whenever they come up in Temple, no one makes a fuss, so I reckon they’re fine.” He didn’t seem sure enough to appease Deih’s fear. First beasts, now statues hidden in the woodlands, older than the founding of their world.

text reads: blueberries along the way. The door to the shed was open. He paused at the entrance and brushed his hair out with his fingers. His hands had five red dots each, arranged on both palms like a lineless star. He curled his fingers in before entering. In the middle of the room, hedged by rakes and hoes and shovels, bags of mulch and wood chips, watering cans and broken sprinkler heads, was a “bike”. A 7th generation StreamGlider… or something like that. It was a bit like the bicycles the wealthy girls of Mide used to ride around Temple plaza, taunting in their ribbons and pointed sun hats. Except that Eternal City’s bicycles were massive beasts that fed on processed crystal, liquid and thick to pour. Leol’s bike was a sharp purple with green stripes curving around the bulbous outer shell. Todd cleared his throat a couple times before sneaking forward to knock his knuckles against the back end. The whirring whined to a stop. Leol appeared over the tire. He pulled those ridiculous bug-eyed glasses off and shook his head, making all the beads and bells in his tight braids ring. The flicker of a broad smile stole over his face. It was quickly dampened to a reasonable closed-mouth grin. He held up one heavily gloved hand and motioned Todd forwards.

Her favorites were the ones of goddesses being carried through the stars by swirls of fire, the hands of their spiritual servants brushing aside the clouds of space dust, holding up their skirt trains so their delicate feet could follow the lights through the void towards Aaledva.

She gave a very put-on sigh and gestured to her drawing. “This spell will link us back to the sigil in Todd’s kea.” Deih’s chest tightened. “And that’s something Randall put there?” It sounded like a distasteful thing to do. Was it painful, she wanted to ask? Did it feel like having something sharp stuck in your throat? Kaylee nodded. “Without Lord Kevah’s permission, and he didn’t even wait for Ven to help. Though I suppose if he hadn’t done it, we wouldn’t be this far. Anyway!” She cleared her throat, waving away any of Randall’s contributions in an instant. “A sigil acts as a hook. It’s like fishing, you see? Put a hook through a worm’s cheek and then reel the line in. Except we can’t reel… we just follow the line.” She paused for a long moment, mouth pursed in a thoughtful way. “Actually, I suppose it’s not very much like fishing at all.”

That should be good.” Sitting back on her legs, she wiped a hand across her forehead, leaving crumbs of earth on her peachy skin. “Gods, is it ever hot! Priest boy, gimme my bag. Then go fetch some water.” Tyea dropped the bag but stayed rooted to the spot. “What’s this spell business?” “Oh, you’ll see if you go fetch the water!” She waved her hand as if to dismiss him. “We passed a creek not five minutes ago. Take both of my canteens.” Grumbling, Tyea headed off. It was surprising that he didn’t have more fight in him. Maybe he was too shy to argue with a person he’d met just the day before, but Deih doubted this. He was always ready to talk over people. As Kaylee dug around in her bag, Deih traced her gaze along the design sewn into her vest. Feathers swirling around braided flower vines. Perhaps Tyea was intimidated by whatever position Kaylee held in Temple. Truthfully, Deih had never seen spells outside of the drawing of signs and small rituals. And the sacrifice. Was that a spell to appease the gods?
