It's not so much "when you piss it off" as "when you lose your rag at it", and it may be only for the protagonist.

Gilligan says he's kind of curmudgeonly but it's not about him or his reaction to fans of his shows. Rhea Seehorn says it's partly defensive: if Carol accepts that people think her books are good, she'll also have to accept it if they turn against them.

That's the point where it was clearly no longer "Happy Days" as conceived and was now "The Fonz Show". So either Happy Days had run out of steam, or it had being consumed by gimmicks.
