What they spend dollars on is what they value. Ballrooms, yes; children, no. Ego building, yes; community building, no. Airplanes, yes; veterans, no. "Interesting" choice is not the phrase I would use.

Farm subsidies and corporate tax breaks go to massive factories growing food that needs to be processed (e.g. massive expanses of corn and soy) but not to smaller farms growing food we eat.

It is sad that this is what it takes for a member of law enforcement to recognize the rights of people in our country. If the Mexican rescuers had saved a different family, the sheriff probably wouldn't have changed his opinion.
