7: None of this vetting is a quick process. It takes time to contact all of your references and associates to ensure that you aren't putting the US or its residents at risk.

6: Then, once all of those steps were completed, I waited for an appointment with my local PIV card office...which never actually happened for several reasons. The most important is how backed up the appointments are. Plus, I don't live near an office so it would have been a special visit for them.

5: I had to share about every country I visited in the last 7 years and why. There were multiple questions about any possible connections to terrorist groups or foreign governments. And I had to get fingerprinted at my local police station so that my prints went through the FBI database.

4: Then I started another, more thorough background check to get a PIV card. I had to share detailed information about every close family member: parents, siblings, children, spouses/life partners so that they can go through background checks. I needed some friends and neighbors to vouch for me.

3: Before I started, I had to pass a drug test and a basic background check ( education, previous employment and any possible criminal record). Then I took trainings on cyber security and government record-keeping. Every system needs a separate request along with the reason i needed access.

2: Even systems that don't contain classified information take a long time to get authorization. Even gaining access to test systems that don't have real data take a long time to get authorization. I designed interfaces for workers at Centers for Medicaid and Medicare and went through this process.
