I think you might like the Delirium series better - the first book is the best one, so you could get away with just reading that one.

If you want Hunger Games vibes, esp in terms of social commentary, you need to read Naomi Novik's Scholomance series.

I find that the Divergent series reads very YA (it feels like it was inspired by The Giver series) whereas The Hunger Games series works for all ages.

Will Trent is a good example, although I think this is easier to pull off in a crime show. Also, maybe The Pitt - the entire season takes place in one day, so each episode is a little problem inside of a larger problem.
