After some Googling, I have seen these described as museum pieces and I am now deceased.

I remember playing monochrome SimCity on my dad’s Mitsubishi laptop a long, long time ago.

I could be wrong, but it seems like only the attacker takes damage right now. Same colored pieces can be damaged from ricochets (the "attacker" is now the subsequent pieces initiating a collision), but a one-on-one hit only hurts the attacker.
