I try to buy sewing machine and vacuum related stuff from the one store left in my area for this reason. They know how to fix the things and I don't want them closing shop when the old guy retires.

Exactly, you could enjoy the games wholly without needing anything outside of them. But, it was there, they didn't make up the spartan backstory to fill a plot hole made by reach, reach retconned some of the backstory

The spartan program part was canon well before the original trilogy concluded, but that was back when it was a video game series with a line of supplemental books for those who wanted to dive deeper instead of a book series with the odd video game. Reach still messed the lore up though
