3️⃣ Annexation

An invasion of Greenland would take a matter of minutes. But it could mean the end of Nato. Would Trump risk it? Some worry that a quirk of cartography – Greenland is often disproportionately large on maps – has whet the appetite of the world’s most powerful former real estate mogul.

2️⃣ Greenland independence

Few Greenlanders want to become part of the US, but a majority want independence from Denmark. This could be an opportunity for the US. An independent Greenland would need security, potentially giving Washington full military access. Is this enough for Trump? Some fear not.

1️⃣ Sticking to the status quo

Greenland has been part of Denmark since 1953. Denmark’s preferred option is to give the US more presence there. Currently the US has one base with fewer than 200 personnel. Officials would also welcome more US investment. The US response, they say, has been lukewarm.

🚆 Rail fares in England will be frozen for the first time in 30 years — until March 2027 — after a jump of 5 per cent in 2025. Reeves has also frozen fuel duty, but only until September, after which the temporary 5p cut introduced by the previous Conservative government will be reversed in stages.

🍔 Food inflation fell to a seven-month low of 4.2 per cent in November, down from a multi-decade high of 19.1 per cent in March 2023. But grocery prices remain almost 40 per cent above levels in January 2021. They surged in the UK after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

⚡ From April household energy bills will fall by £150 on average, thanks to a shift in green policy costs from tariffs to general taxation announced by chancellor Rachel Reeves in the November Budget. But the IFS has suggested that these savings will be eroded over time by other rising energy costs.
January 6, 2026 at 1:24 PM
🏠 Annual rent growth slowed to 4.4 per cent in November, well below a near all-time peak of 9 per cent a year ago. Wage growth has also outpaced house prices but the average rate on the existing stock of mortgages hit 3.9 per cent in November, the highest in more than a decade.
