Shadow Man: 2econd Coming is an underwhelming sequel.

It ditches everything I love about the first one and turns it into a linear action game. Mike, Nettie, Jaunty got ugly redesigns. The story is lame. Music is still good.

I want to like it, but it's rough.

Blippo+ is a neat idea. A "non-game". It simulates channel surfing through wacky 90s cable TV from an alien planet.

It reminds me of the acting in 90s videogames like Command & Conquer and Resident Evil, in a good way.

It's nostalgic, even though I never cared much for TV except cartoons as a kid.

I'm a silly goose for laughing about this logo.
DiC Entertainment

I was talking with a friend about Sony MiniDiscs. I made a typo, "Minidic Player" and we started laughing. Then I was reminded of this clip. :P

I feel pretty good today. :3

Hope you're all doing well.

I was kinda down recently. Didn't have much energy with the dull, dark winter days. But we've got a few days of sunshine coming and it really lifts my mood.

I'll go on a walk. Later I'll play Parodius SNES with a friend.

Here's a folk revival performance of King Orfeo (Skoven Årle Grøn) by Danish scholars Thomas Bredsdorff and Anne-Marie Mai at a sing-around in Denmark in 2009.

Many people don't like bagpipes. But they can be effective in the right setting.

I love this recording. Sadly the tape ran out at the end.

This song fascinated me since I was a teen.

King Orfeo or Skoven Årle Grøn is a folk song retelling of the Greek legend of Orpheus. It has verses in Shetland Scots and a refrain in Norn, the extinct Scandinavian language of Shetland and Orkney.

Here it is sung by Kitty Anderson of Lerwick in 1955.

Folk songs, riddles, sayings and place names from Shetland and Orkney still contain traces of Norn, an extinct Scandinavian language spoken before the islands were pledged to Scotland by Norway in 1468–69.

The Unst Boat Song is entirely in Norn. Here it is sung by Kitty Anderson of Lerwick in 1955.

Here's Ewan MacColl singing a traditional pirate ballad, Captain Ward and the Rainbow, in a recording made by Alan Lomax in 1951.

Ewan was a ballad singer par excellence. A 10 LP series of Child Ballads, The Long Harvest, he recorded together with Peggy Seeger was my introduction to ballad singing.

Ewan MacColl (1915–1989) is one my idols. Born in England to Scottish parents. Theatre actor, socialist, folk singer, one of the originators of the 1960s British Folk Revival. Married American folk singer Peggy Seeger in 1977.

Here's Ewan & Peggy performing "Johnny Sangster" live in Dublin in 1978.

Willie the Weeper is both a folk song and a jazz standard. I'm fascinated by it.

One of the earliest, if not the first song about drug addiction. Willie smokes opium and indulges in strange dreams.

Cab Calloway's Minnie the Moocher from 1931 is based on it. Here's a 1945 performance by Sam Hinton.

The reason I rarely upload and share files on the Internet Archive is the slow upload speed.

I don't have the patience to upload several Gigabytes on a website where doing so takes an entire day.

Nightdive Studios' Shadow Man Remastered is an excellent remaster but not without minor nitpicks.

A small number of graphical effects are missing, such as underwater red fog and the sun lens flare effect.

I also noticed that zombies mumbling to themselves are barely audible now which is a shame. 🦊

Winter time is soup time 🦊🧡

I made a vegetable soup and it was a ton of work but turned out really enjoyable and it'll last me for two or three days. Hooray.

In a moment of weakness I bought a Steam Deck OLED.

It was collecting dust and I had regrets about buying "the same console twice". But now the beautiful display is growing on me.

I'm using the LCD version docked as a PC and the OLED as a handheld. 🦊

DuckStation is an amazing PS1 emulator. It's so fast.

Look at the framerate I can get in the notoriously bad Shadow Man PS1 port with overclocking set to 450%.

It's crazy. I can make it run butter smooth.

An enhanced version of Shadow Man for Nvidia GeForce-256 graphics cards was worked on by Acclaim for a few months in 1999. It was cancelled.

A WIP build was discovered in the Duffy Collection: hiddenpalace.org/Shadow_Man_(...

By copying its data folder into the regular PC version it can be played.

The Wee Wee Man (Child 38) is an ancient Scottish traditional folk ballad. It can be traced back as far as the 14th century Cotton Manuscript.

Only once has a tune for it been preserved. In 2001, from the singing of Stanley Robertson of Aberdeen who heard it from old people as a child in the 1950s.

Jump physics in the PS1 version of Shadow Man appear to depend on framerate.

Overclocking the CPU in an emulator to make the game run smoother makes you jump higher.

It enables sequence breaking and out of bounds exploration with little effort.

Shadow Man PS1 Exclusive Water Effect

For all the blame this port deservedly gets it does have nice looking water in the Louisiana Bayou level.

The effect is called vertex displacement. The water texture deforms to resemble the movement of waves.

Differences between Shadow Man on Dreamcast and PC Windows are minor.

PC lighting is darker, textures look grainier. Dreamcast looks brighter, cleaner, water uses a different texture.

The Dreamcast port suffers from audio delay. Voices play delayed in cutscenes. Mosquito swarms lack sound effects.
