What’s flowering at the Fuchsietum? Fuchsia ‘Cardinal’ is another classic American cultivar released by Evans & Reeves Nurseries of Los Angeles in 1938. It has long internodes & likes to spread its shoulders wide so give it room. Also hardy in the usual places many fuchsias are hardy.

What’s flowering at The Fuchsietum? Fuchsia ’Ravenslaw’. Not to be confused with the Four Houses of Hogwarts, this “law” is Old English & means a hill, (burial) mound, or tumulus of stones. I can see a flock of flamboyant red ravens assembling on the hill laying some giddy plot or induction serious.

What’s flowering at the Fuchsietum? Fuchsia ’Magic Lanterns’, a very floriferous & hot-sun tolerant hardy.

(As far as I can ascertain it was bred and/or marketed by New World Plants Ltd of South Yorkshire UK. It’s not been properly registered with the AFS and I don’t know when it was introduced.)

It’s here! The Fuchsietum will soon have its own weather station. Once I figure out how to assemble and set it up. 🤣

Majestically reigning over Cape Town, Table Mountain alone is said to contain more different species than all of native Great Britain combined. More to come after I get home. 2/2

Totsiens, Kapstad! Starting on the long trek home to the PNW this morning as our glorious adventures in one of the world’s most richest floral kingdoms comes to an end. The diversity of plants we saw just in Namaqualand and the Karoo has been amazing. 1/2

Happy Vernal Equinox! It’s not every year you get to enjoy spring twice. Been on a “plant safari” in Namaqualand in South Africa. I’ll post excerpts of our South African adventures when I get back home but here’s Gladiolus alatus for you in the meantime!

The proper spelling of the cultivar is actually ‘Nicis Findling’ as German doesn’t use apostrophes in possessives. I will generally add it in English text, though, to avoid confusion. “Findling” works in both languages. 2/2

What’s flowering at the Fuchsietum? Fuchsia ‘Nici’s Findling’. This was a random seedling found by Nici Hermann, daughter of German fuchsia-hybridizer Ermel Hermann who released it in 1985. 1/2

What’s flowering at the Fuchsietum? Fuchsia ‘DebRon’s Stella Mae’. Planted out even though it’s got a trailing habit just to see how it would grow in the ground. Definitely needs staking if I decide to leave it. It’s also rated as tender so we’ll see about that as well.

….Franklinia alatamaha x Gordonia lasianthus, developed by the Dept of Horticultural Science at North Carolina State University in 2003. It’s a large shrub or multi-stemmed small tree that might get to about 20 ft (6 m). Fall flowering, it also colors up well in that season. 2/2

What’s flowering at the Fuchsietum? And fruiting! Punica granatum ‘Nikitskii Ranii’. It’s a very cold-hardy Ukrainian cultivar from the Nikka Botanical Garden in Crimea. In the US it’s doing business under the supposed “trademark” Crimson Sky.

Watering this morning in the dawn. While it’s still refreshing cool. It’s 63 F (17 C) and I’m in a sweater. Quite a turnaround later this afternoon. Today’s high is forecast to be 102 F (39 C).

Of all the plants aspiring to be Fuchsia because of a vague, imagined resemblance, California fuchsias are certainly the most legitimate to claim the name. They’re both closely related members of the Evening Primrose Family (Onagraceae). 2/2

What’s flowering at the Fuchsietum? Epilobium septentrionale, ‘Select Mattole’ (syn. Zauschneria septentionalis) is native to N Calif. into SW Oregon. Like its congeneric cousin, Epilobium canum, it’s often called a California fuchsia or, sometimes more specifically, the Humboldt County fuchsia. 1/2

What's flowering at the Fuchsietum? Begonia boliviensis ‘Bonfire’. It's fairly hardy when planted in a location that stays dry during the winter. Mine is in a raised be that drains well and has overwintered just fine despite our ceaseless winter rains.
