I haven't! What I know of the film comes mainly from Simon Callow's biography of Laughton and various articles and bits I've read over the years.

The film was barely promoted by a studio that didn't understand it ("Can we not film it in colour?"), critically reviled and a commercial failure.

He was heartbroken by it all and simply returned to acting.

I think it makes perfect sense, he's a child, he's overwhelmed, he's frozen up, he's reliving the moment he last saw his dad, etc.

Kid shouldn't have had to deal with ANY of this.

That was kind of deliberate in the casting of Mitchum, he was supposed to be attractive and charismatic.
