Actually, it's pretty informative (to me) when big names engage in this kind of groupthink - Helps clarify why winning celebrities failed to win Democrats the presidency.

Ultimately charitable giving is done freely, by individual choice, or it wouldn't be charity. I agree modeling and predicting outcomes is hard - I honestly have no idea if $100 to eradicate Guinea Worm is better or worse than $1000 of supplies for my volunteer ambulance company.

The title for the piece is lousy. Charitable giving is something that we should all do and that we should all strive to optimize, but "bang per buck" should be a debate and an individual decision. The hit on "effective altruism" contributes nothing to encouraging thoughtful charity.
