Long grain white rice koji to test the incubator. It’s ALIVE!!

Chicken of the woods miso, here we come.

Many of them are white to start and then get toasty as they age.

Really quickly, I’ve started to locate and peek in on the pine tree plantings so maybe I’ll find a matsutake someday. It’s already paying off in finding other species! We haven’t had decent rain in weeks but this shady pocket kind of surprised me.
Emerging boletes in grass, still slimy from being born! As far as I can tell, Boletus auriporus. A tiny chicken fat mushroom in the grass under white pine trees. See you tomorrow tiny yellow cap ! Boletus auriporus (top) and Suillus americanus (bottom) on a perforated stainless steel tray.

A little walk in the woods after work to soothe my discontent always helps.
A very large (about 30” across) hen of the woods mushroom flush that is sporulating. It’s light tan at this point in two large leafy bunches that have conjoined. A light white shadow of spores colors the leaf litter in front of it. I’ve never seen teeny tiny sprouts of chicken of the woods but I think that’s what these are. Tiny specks of orange fungus on rotting log with moss on the bark. An outcropping of chicken of the woods mushrooms about twelve feet off the ground on a scar from a damaged oak tree. There are small bits of more orange mushroom peeking out from under the bark. To the right, there are other mushrooms, jack o’lanterns, growing on the ground.

This is the other end of the shelf. Art from my wife’s families time living in Brasil. The busts are going back to the mantle soon. My wife is pretty sad about seeing work her dad did for State Department and USAID get wrecked. The bright side is Brasil will meet all of China’s soybean needs, no US!
Various items on a shelf but of particular interest, four female heads and a parrot, perhaps carved from ebony. Brazilian folk art, so beautiful African and Indigenous visages ready for their own display.

Visited an old friend who didn’t produce any mushrooms last year. It reminds me of a flower in a lapel.
This is the same tree from my profile picture. Another year, another beautiful display! A flush of chicken of the woods mushroom, resplendent in yellow and orange ruffles at the base of a hardwood tree.
