P.S. "Culling Game" (死滅回游) also translates to "annihilation migration". It refers to the phenomenon where certain fish species (including Emperor Angelfish) migrate on warm currents to areas that become uninhabitable when the temperature drops. Fish who cannot migrate back will perish. Adapt or die.

And now we reach the part of Over the Threshold which borrows from my life a little!

Here's my corridor, along with the opening to the upcoming chapter 15. Please don't read this if you want to go in completely clean! And if you read, please don't spoil it for others in the replies/QRTs 🙏 #satosugu
The lobby for the Universal Music London offices, showing a neat line of security gates in front of a corridor lined with elevators. The air in the capital tasted bad. That was the first thing Suguru noticed as he climbed out of the car, rubbing his sweaty palms on his pants for as long as it took for his mother to round the back of the vehicle. He’d already stopped by the time she reached him, but it didn’t save him from the whip of her fingers, discreetly slapping his wrist as she bowed to the chauffeur. Suguru had already decided he didn’t like Tokyo on the drive in, watching from the back of a fancy car as the countryside was gradually replaced by various shapes in various shades of grey, his view of the summer sky slowly swallowed up by glass and steel that seemed to climb higher and higher as they travelled deeper into the city. It had felt a bit like Suguru was being swallowed up by glass and steel, too. Like wandering into a labyrinth only to realise far too late that he’d dropped his thread. Tokyo was an alien landscape; it was the domain of giants. Still, the building before him took the cake. Looming overhead, the head offices of Emperor Records seemed to stretch endlessly upwards, too tall to make out the top of them. Staring up at where the structure scraped the sky, Suguru thought he should have felt crushed under its imposing facade. Instead, he had the feeling if he reached up and tapped on it, it would shatter like spun sugar. Big glassy geometric shapes he could fold like origami. If the outside was showy, however, the inside told a different story. The lobby was pristine to the point of impersonal in its design, with minimalist decor in varying shades of neutral. It was a sparsely furnished space that didn’t seem to suit the biggest music corporation in the whole of Japan in the slightest. In fact, the framed faces on the wall over reception, almost all familiar to Suguru, were the only sign the place belonged to the music business at all. Those and the stencilled logos on the opposite wall, all of them crowned by the sleek black and white fins of Emperor Records. Names and faces framing the entrance to a long corridor lined with elevators, dark where it stretched further than the daylight at Suguru’s back could reach. It was all of it muted, restrained, yet the neat row of security gates barring access to the opportunities awaiting beyond still felt incongruous somehow. The ease with which Suguru could have vaulted them seemed to bely the curious power they held over the space, as though they’d been installed to keep something in rather than out. Names and faces framing that long corridor. The act of passing through those gates felt like a point of no return. Like crossing a threshold into a world there was no coming back from, for better or for worse. It seemed to Suguru like stepping into one of those elevators was the same as walking into the belly of a beast with his eyes wide open. Names and faces framing his future. ‘Okay?’ His mother barely stood as tall as his shoulder these days, but she reached for him all the same, reached up to settle her hand there. His mother squeezed his shoulder with trembling fingers. And Suguru swallowed down his nerves.

Satoru knows the importance of precision; he knows the devastation caused by even a single vector left unaccounted for. That was a lesson he learned before he could even speak in full sentences. People are like petals, they told him in the aftermath, easy to bruise if he miscalculates. But Suguru isn’t people. And Satoru never miscalculates. ‘You know, Suguru,’ he says, reaching down to smooth away the tension between his shoulder blades. ‘People tend to underestimate Blue.’ To the ignorant and the impressionable, it doesn’t seem as formidable as Red or Purple. It doesn’t create spectacular explosions in rainbow colours. ‘But when I use it like this?’ He pours amplified cursed energy into the Limitless now, gathering it in his palm before bringing it down on Suguru’s ass cheek. Blue shifts to red, blooming beautifully. ‘The space around my hand converges infinitely at the precise moment of impact,’ he explains over Suguru’s gasping. ‘Everything is drawn towards the negative distance I bring into reality. Nothing can escape an impossibility like that.’ Satoru slaps him three times in quick succession, revelling in the shout he smothers in the sheets. He’s barely even trying; it’s less force than he uses on his first years in the training room, but it doesn’t matter when Blue is wrapped around his fingers. Worn like a glove, it's a weapon all of its own. ‘It’s like a pair of brass knuckles, only far less crude and far more efficient. Not a single joule wasted,’ Satoru says, a little breathless with his own brilliance. ‘Do you understand, Suguru?’ Blue doesn’t create spectacular explosions in rainbow colours, but it’s versatile. It’s complex, it's sophisticated. It’s why it’s Satoru’s favourite part of his skillset even now.

Staring down at him, Suguru looks incredulous. A little nervous, perhaps, with his brows pinched together like that. He looks like he doesn’t know how to feel, smile wavering even as his cheeks flush and his eyes darken, pupils blown wide with arousal. Satoru shapes his voice into something softer. Soft but firm as he pats his thigh. Just enough to take the edge off when he gives his command one more time. ‘Over my knee, Suguru.’ For a moment, he wonders if Suguru is going to make him fight for it. Satoru’s gaze flickers to where the corner of his mouth twitches slightly and he feels his heart twinge something awful in his chest. Feels his throat seize with a strange desperation, something he doesn’t want to say getting caught on the way up. Then Suguru softens, too. Without a word, he shuffles back on the futon, slipping off the sheets like silk to stand before him. In the low light of the temple compound after dark, he towers over Satoru like a king. Here, in this place Satoru only ever steals away to in the dead of night, Suguru is king — but now, he obeys someone else, smiling at Satoru as he first tugs his hair free of its constraints. It falls around his shoulders like a curtain, darkness blacker than the darkness beyond the window, even glinting under the glow of the lamps. His expression is dangerously at ease as he rolls his shoulders, letting his already disheveled juban fall open. Even with his heart in his throat, Satoru can’t help his gaze falling to newly uncovered skin, stretched taut over a sculpted chest. The cotton slips down over Suguru’s arms — and that’s when Satoru sees them.

The doors roll open with a rumble. Overhead, the sky rolls and rumbles, too. And Satoru’s voice is a low rumble, words rolling off his tongue like a warning. ‘Better run, Suguru.’ A walking talking nuclear bomb, the kind that brings entire nations to their knees. Probably the deadliest living thing on the planet. Satoru is a predator from which there is no escape, and Suguru is his prey. Yet even as he leaps from the train with a laugh, lifted by the low pressure, carried on the warm currents rising into the storm brewing overhead, Suguru has never wanted to lose to Satoru so badly.

He didn’t expect judgement in blue, red, and purple, but he expected something explosive. Not this easy acceptance that almost resembles indifference. Maybe even absolution, if Suguru could summon the audacity to believe it. ‘Okay?’ he croaks over the call of the crickets. ‘Is that all you have to say?’ His eyes dart to the side in time to see Satoru shrug. He swallows around snatched breaths that come increasingly swift and shallow. ‘Then does that mean…’ As he trails off, too afraid to give voice to the words that would damn the both of them, Satoru turns to look at him, the intensity of his gaze utterly unforgiving. Even as he gasps for reprieve from its brilliant burn, Suguru can’t look away. No matter how much he feels like an ant caught in the path of a magnifying glass, no matter how much he feels like a moth flailing over an irresistible flame, Satoru holds him there. And Suguru holds his nerve. ‘Do you hate them?’ he ventures at last, voice barely more than a whisper. ‘Non-sorcerers, I mean?’ Satoru shakes his head, easy as breathing. And Suguru finds his own breathing comes a little easier in the wake of it. His own relief almost comes as a surprise. ‘Nah,’ Satoru says, scrunching his freckled nose a little. ‘Protecting the weak is exhausting, but I don’t hate them.’ He looks away, out towards the setting sun as his expression settles into something thoughtful. Caught in the low light, coloured in its glow, he looks all blush and beautiful. Petal pink when he says, ‘You don’t hate a rose because it has thorns, do you?’ After all this time, Suguru is still taken aback by the uncanny way Satoru can transform when the moment calls for it. Somewhere in the distant past, there’s poetry in his genes. He comes from a family of statesmen; he’s practically a politician himself. The sombre way he conducts himself when he isn’t trying to drag a smile out of someone shouldn’t catch Suguru off guard anymore. Still, the truth cuts deep. Even dressed up in rose petals, it’s sharp as it sinks into his flesh. Beyond the mountains, the sun drips blood red down the horizon. ‘If it kills you, you might.’

The figure skater, Geoffrey Brissaud, staring up at his ice dance partner as she rests her blade near his jaw. His breath hitches when Suguru’s blade digs into the soft skin beneath his jaw, then digs in a little harder. A rough edge catches; it punctures. When Suguru drags his boot, the blade goes easily, slowly tearing fragile scar tissue asunder in a clean, straight line. Satoru lets it happen. Feels devotion trickle hot and sticky down the column of his throat, splashing onto the ice by his knees. Still, he does nothing. He just looks and looks and looks. And Suguru looks back. Perhaps the strip lights are playing tricks on Satoru’s eyes; he’s always struggled in fluorescent lighting. He wonders why they haven’t upgraded it after all this time then logs a note to make a donation then hates himself for thinking about anything but Suguru. Except this, too, is about Suguru. Everything is about Suguru really. Satoru just needs to know if he can still read him. Needs to know if the reason he isn’t sure what to make of Suguru’s expression is because Suguru isn’t sure what to make of it either. His eyes seem to flicker iridescent under the shitty lighting, changing colours faster than Satoru can keep track. Triumph, violet and violent. Golden awe, perhaps. There’s muted brown guilt and red, red rage. Something Satoru can’t identify, too. Something dark and dangerous — jagged around the edges, liquid at its centre. Like an ink well splashed across the page. He can’t name it, but if he could hear colour, Satoru knows it would sound like Suguru’s voice when he speaks next. ’Just checking you still bleed.’ Oh, how Satoru had bled. All over the ice, stark and terrible and beautiful. When he saw the images from his hospital bed, he’d wondered how his heart was still beating. The blood loss was staggering; his body had betrayed him. Suguru didn’t visit him and Satoru had wondered how his heart was still beating. It was a betrayal, body and soul. It felt like his veins had bled everything he was onto the ice and left him with nothing. It feels like that now, too. ‘I still bleed.’ For you goes unspoken. It’s deafening. Suguru’s dark eyes are like an ink well splashed across the page. Like devotion splashed across the ice.

Overhead, the swifts scream their farewells to a season that’s gone on too long. They’re heading south, over the ocean in search of warmer shores, chasing endless summer. Looking up at the boomerang of their bodies, silhouetted against the dusky sky as they begin their journey home, Suguru wonders what they sense that he doesn’t. There is comfort in cycles, he supposes. There is comfort in knowing that some things are bigger than him, that some things are beyond the realm of his mortal comprehension. That some things are simply beyond his control. Limitless boy. Impossible to contain. Impossible to deny. For the second time in his life, Suguru thinks about letting it all go up in flames. Not in a blaze of blue this time, but in a gentle red smoulder. The kind of fire that feeds new life, sweeping through the ground cover, clearing a path for greenery to grow through the gaps.

‘Why?’ she asks when she loses. ‘What are you going to do about Gojō Satoru?’ It’s cute how she drags the name out, like the privilege attached to it makes a speck of difference to Suguru of all people. Still, it’s a good question. What to do about Tokyo College of Music’s blue-eyed boy? They’re not in any of the same classes, obviously, but Suguru has seen him from afar. Hard not to. Big guy, but such a loser. Dresses like a sixteen year old who’s made it his personal mission in life to get pushed up against the lockers at lunchtime. Probably got sad that the average high school bully couldn’t reach his collar and decided to try his luck at college instead. After two and a half years at this glorified members club, Suguru has learned that rich people have to manufacture hardships for themselves. Still, all that money to his name and he can’t even pick out a single big boy shirt for himself? Yeah, Gojō Satoru is the type to piss his pants the moment someone like Suguru so much as breathes in his direction. Either piss his pants or come in them. ‘Nothing, ‘ Suguru finally says, because contrary to what people like Gojō Satoru believe, there’s no pleasure in bullying nerds without good reason. Twice is only coincidence, after all. ‘But the next time it happens?’ In the seat across, Mei is smiling again, twirling her cello on its endpin as she reclines over the backrest. Her dark gaze lingers and prickles. She’s probably wondering what she can get out of it. There’s no way Mei hasn’t made any attempts to add Gojō Satoru to her growing collection of rich boys, all unsuccessful by the looks of things. It’s an interesting thought. A satisfying one. ‘No need to trouble yourself with it, Mei Mei.’ When Suguru finally returns her smile, it’s with twice the sugar and three times the duplicity. It’s with a toss of the hair and a promise. ‘I’ll take care of Gojō Satoru.’

‘I don’t give a shit about popular.’ ‘Believe me, I know!’ Okay. That pisses Satoru off. Less because of the implication and more because Yaga sounds exasperated in a way that makes him feel bad. He turns his glare on the creepy plushies lined up along the top of the upright in his piano teacher’s little room, scowling at them one by one. They still put him on edge. Especially the panda cub at the end. Way too lifelike. Who wants a weird little audience when you’re trying to work on your articulation? When you’re trying to hold your boundaries? ‘Satoru.’ And now his voice has gone all quiet. Fucking hell. ‘You need to learn to play with other musicians at some point.’ ‘Why?’ Satoru glowers down at where his fingers are depressing the keys slowly, silently, pressing the hammer to the string without any of the force required to make them sing. ‘This is precisely why I chose piano in the first place.’ He’s speaking mostly to himself now, muttering under his breath. He doesn’t need the plushies knowing his business. ‘So other people can’t hold me back.’

Suguru can’t decide whether it’s a blessing or a curse that he can’t see his face. Stood on Satoru’s side of the altar, he has to imagine the devotion in his eyes. Has to settle for a reflection of it, profaned by the glassy surface of a gaze in the wrong colour. It feels like a near miss and a devastating loss. He wants to know what love looks like in baby blue. He’d hoped to borrow it from Shōko. Hoped to stow it away, ready to bring out on the loneliest nights when he pretends it’s all for him. Probably a blessing disguised as a curse then.

‘We all thought it would be you two, you know.’ The way Shōko is playing with her wedding band — running her finger over the platinum, tracing the grooves in the gold — is the only reason Suguru knows what she’s talking about. He doesn’t say anything. Just takes a drag from his cigarette, careless of the ash that falls onto his bare chest. He knows Satoru will fill the silence for him. ‘Me and Suguru?’ When Shōko hums in confirmation, he laughs, bewildered. ‘What the hell?’ It stings more than it should. Then again, Satoru has never had the opportunity to dismiss the idea openly before. No one has ever said it before. ‘Oh, come off it,’ Shōko says. ‘All that “we’re the strongest” shit was gay as hell.’ She reaches up to fix his hair where it’s sticking to his forehead, rough about it until she isn’t. ‘You two were weirdly close for a while.’ For a while. Now, there’s always a distance spanning someone else’s body between them. ‘You were there, too.’ His hand slips over her stomach, coming to squeeze at the fleshy part of her hip. Suguru watches it from the corner of his eye, inhaling until it burns, holding the smoke until his lungs start screaming. He drags his eyes down her naked body — down to where their legs are tangled together in the sheets, a whole half metre of king size mattress between Suguru’s feet and theirs. It’s always like this. He never feels more like a spare part than in the immediate aftermath of their lovemaking. Because it is their lovemaking. They just invite Suguru along to facilitate it occasionally. And when it’s over, it’s always like this. He tosses his spent cigarette in the otherwise empty ashtray on the bedside table. No one uses it but Suguru every once in a blue moon he comes around. Fucking weird that they keep an ashtray especially for him. Fucking weird that they let him smoke in their bedroom at all. Always felt like a consolation prize to Suguru. A “thanks for letting us borrow your dick for the night”. ‘Yeah, but it was different with you two.’

They have a winter wedding. And then they have a spring wedding, too. The first ceremony — Shinto style, traditional for the clan — took place on Setsubun. It fell on February 2 this year, but Suguru still ended up crying into his drink on his birthday. It’s almost funny in hindsight. He’s only ever seen Satoru in a montsuki a handful of times before, and always at the behest of his family. This time was no different. Just a formality to tolerate as the head of the Gojō clan finally entered into a long-awaited marriage. A symbol of his masculine strength as he shared three sips of sake with his blushing bride, black and white in balance. It wasn’t that though, the thing that set Suguru off. It wasn’t anything really. No, the stupid thing that set him off was the realisation that Satoru’s first wedding to Ieiri Shōko — Gojō Shōko, now — was the only time he’d ever seen Satoru smiling while wearing the crest of his clan. It was the realisation that, for the first time in his life, Satoru could count someone he truly loved among the people he called his family. Easy to pass them off as happy tears for the happy couple. For the beautiful happy couple. After the first one — the legally binding one — Suguru had thought the worst was over. Thought after all these long years, he could finally make his peace with it. Fucking hilarious. Turns out the only thing that hurts more than watching the person you love marry someone else is watching the person you love marry someone else a second time. Twice within the span of four months, actually. For Suguru, it’s the cruelest twist of the knife in a wound that just won’t close.
