I’ve always known there were sick humans in this world, but there are also some pretty sick bugs out there too!

You know what some people use in their “traditional yogurt?” I was surprised as anybug to find out.

This parsitiod had a whole operation going— cops think bootlegging booze is a […]

The FT has described the AI bubble in objective terms. 40% of growth in the US this year has been AI. I find it notable this observation is in a “mainstream” financial paper rather than a blog.

If all of the AI vanished what would be lost? Would your job be harder? would you ba unable to do […]

Listen as long as a serious little ant in a fedora doesn’t show up to “ask some follow up questions” and investigate your spoon you are probably fine.

API (Ant Private Investigator) Chronicles:

Sometimes the strangest little crumb can be the key to the big cake, just such a morsel cracked open my last case. A tidbit that stuck in my crop— like an irritated mandible I couldn’t let it be.

The bug seemed a nice enough gal, on the surface, but […]

Also PR seems to be about NOT saying things often. It can be annoying when I get a PR answer to a domestic question.

"Were you going to feed the cat?"

"I'm certain she will be fed and I'm really glad that you can take this over."

Amazing.

A lot of PR seems to be about sharing information in the right order to the right people. Keeping track of who gets the most exciting information first. Giving "off the record" hints to the right people. Making corrections to people who you know will lie before they even get the lie out in the […]

My husband works in PR. He's really good at it because he is a person with whom it is impossible to stay angry. He even makes people who are angry at each other less angry just by being there. I don't know how he does this. So I shouldn't have been surprised when I asked him if PR people are […]

"ponera" means "evil" or "wicked" a name given to this vast group of ants probably because of their fearsome stings. (I will maintain their innocence, look more closely they also tend to have larger eyes than ants in other groups, they are cute!)

Anyway "megaponera" could be […]

If termites are eating your home don't get mad. Get even! Become termitophagous! Who is mad about what's for dinner NOW?

What surprised me most? Megaponera are in the Odontomachus group! That means that Megaponera are more closely related to trapjaw ants than they are to the "panther ants" of the Americas.

At least Dinoponera is where I'd expect them to be on this tree.

Further Megaponera are also more closely […]

Genetics and phylogeny are fascinating. I know a bit less about the Ponerinae ants than I do about Formicinae. So, I thought that Megaponera would be a close relative of of the similarly shaped "panther ants" of the Americas.

There is only one species of […]

Ponerinae tend to be more tropical, often they can sting. One of the most charismatic Ponerinae are the Matabele (Megaponera analis) a single species genus of big, black, termitophagous ants who march in unmistakable columns all over Africa in to raid the nests of termites, in a war between […]
