Americans should really study this country’s roots in religious extremism. The first settlers weren’t freedom-loving pilgrims — they were European zealots fleeing persecution to build their own theocracy on stolen land. Many of their beliefs still shape U.S. ideology today.

The American Revolution overthrew British kings, not the elite class. It replaced one set of rulers with another, leaving slavery, Indigenous dispossession, and capitalist exploitation intact. Symbolically revolutionary, materially a bourgeois project—freedom was selective.
