Not going to be saying goodbye to this though for obvious reasons...

Nicely articulated Roo, agree with all of this. It’s so overwhelming. And hard to know how to prevent and push back against it. But I’m also resolute in absolutely refusing to accept it.

Surely there'll be a lock in?

Hey, see replies to Anna here. So far so good. Rule of thumb is to not have everything locked in to one service...

I've almost done this a few times and then get sucked back into the land of GDocs. And as for how Google Calendar invitations (from others) don't seem to play nicely with others...proper monopoly stuff. What's your new stack?

Synology Drive + Photos are a great replacement for Google Drive / Photos which were the hardest things to unpick for me. Just hated having Googles tentacles in everything and feeling locked into giving them £s forever.

In fairness, I'll not be completely free of GDocs/Sheets etc, if a client shares anything from there. But in that case I'll just use my free gmail account. Again easily unpickable.

For email/calendar, I shifted to Fastmail which has been ace. Not free, but my rationale is to not use a sub that is so convoluted to leave that I'm trapped. And Fastmail would be easy to leave if I wanted to. Also seems to work with Google Cal invites so far :)

And don’t even get me started on Plex, how did I not have this set up years ago. So very good 👌🏼

In so doing have learnt of the joys of owning a Synology NAS, fully controlling my data and having everything auto backed up on a schedule. Now experiencing some kind of digital zen 🧘🏻
