It's not a true engineer replacement as the click bait alarmists would have it, but equivalent to pair programming with a reasonably skilled mid-level coder. The value-add is obvious in efficiency and quality improvements, but it's still not the AGI revolution.

They are, however, incredibly useful for software and data engineering across the software dev lifecycle. It's far more efficient to chat with an LLM than chase down StackOverflow posts.

They do a reasonable job writing code as well.
