St Mary’s Church, Stottesdon, is a Norman gem with early medieval roots. Its highlight is the Herefordshire school Romanesque font placed there by Aston Master Mason in 1138. It was praised by Pevsner as Shropshire’s finest—an enduring witness to centuries of faith and community.

Today is the anniversary of the deaths of the 'Nine Men of Madeley'. Of the nine 'men', most were still boys who died in a mining disaster. I have rewritten my article to reflect new research about the tragedy.

I want to take us back to St Michael’s churchyard in Madeley now, for there are still more stories to be told. Let us pause amongst the head...

Llanyblodwel churchyard holds an 18th-century table tomb with a carved memento mori. Unusual for lacking any name or inscription, these raised stone memorials were once popular with the emerging middle classes. They are rare now due to being prone to collapse.

So moving ... anyone who had family or friends in the mining community will relate to this - and anyone who doesn't should read it to get a true feel as to what these [often very young] miners and their families lived with every day ...

✨️NEW POST✨️

My latest blog post discusses the complex story of Emma Davies, who was at the centre of 'The Shropshire Hoax' in 1883. Though not a traditional ghost story, I believe her story is important.

Victorian gravestones often featured hands, a common funerary motif. A hand with an upward finger symbolized the path to heaven and eternal life, guiding mourners to look heavenward, trust in God, and find comfort.

This particularly lovely example is from Great Ness, Shropshire.

Pentre Ifan is over five thousand years old and constructed from local bluestone (also used for Stonehenge), there is a real magic to this ancient site. Folklore suggests that fairies are seen here, resembling little children in clothes like "soldiers with red caps."

A gorgeous example of a mosaic gravestone in Broseley Cemetery, Shropshire.Though fairly rare in the wider Telford area, they reflect the influence of the tile work industry in the Severn Valley and the skills its artisans possessed. I think this is particularly beautiful. 💚

In Hope Bowdler churchyard lies Francis Phillips (1657); his gravestone is one of the oldest in Shropshire. On the stone, it wishes for "an untroubled mold" which expresses his desire to lie in the grave undisturbed. It is an incredible piece of history and reminds us how special churchyards can be.

Folklore has unfairly stereotyped Ann 'Nanny' Morgan the 'Wenlock Witch'. I've dedicated the best part of 4 years to researching her and sharing her story. She deserves to be remembered with dignity.
