December 18th is International Migrants Day.

We stand in solidarity with migrants in Canada against increasing racism and discrimination, and declining support for newcomers.

Immigration policies should prioritize safety, dignity, and inclusion.

Today is the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

We stand in solidarity with sex workers. We mourn the lives lost to anti-sex work bias. We demand systemic change to create a world where sex workers are respected, supported, and safe.

The World Cup is coming and so is the myth about human trafficking.

It’s time to end that myth and focus on what really matters: worker rights and action against labour exploitation in global sporting events.

Oversimplified “rescue” narratives of human trafficking do not address root causes of exploitation, producing stereotypes and short-term solutions that ignore survivors’ unique experiences.

We need flexible and diverse support to fortify communities against exploitation.

Experiences of exploitation vary. One solution won’t help everyone. Organizations already doing good work in their communities know what’s needed. Indigenous communities may need culturally safe care; temporary workers may need better visa options. Needs are different. Responses should reflect that.

Blame and hate towards immigrants and refugees has increased and government support has declined.

Stand with us. Show your support for immigrants and refugees, because we know we’re better together and that immigrant and refugee rights prevent trafficking!

Winnipeg, MB GAATW CA hosted a national meeting with Indigenous, migrant workers, sex workers, trafficking survivors & 2SLGBTQIA+ leaders. The meeting centred people often excluded from decision-making & are best positioned to drive change against violence, exploitation, and trafficking in Canada.

Human trafficking survivors are invited to speak in ways that align with others’ expectations, rather than being supported to share on their own terms. GAATW CA & Collaborative Community Solutions co-hosted a conversation shaped by survivors, not just about survivors. See resource at bit.ly/4nn0QW9

This important piece challenges the reflex to rely on criminal justice solutions, even when better options exist, like funding trusted community groups. Let’s amplify evidence-based coverage and push for smarter, more effective anti-trafficking responses. @thetyee.ca #trafficking
