Proud supervisor moment this afternoon! Our honours student, Maddison, did a great job presenting their project on post-acute infection syndromes. There was heaps of interest and Maddison fielded many questions. 👏 Watch this space for updates on this exciting project! 🧪🥼🧫

It is #LongCOVID Awareness Day. At least 10% of people will experience symptoms for many months, even years after COVID. These can be debilitating & impact everyday things we all take for granted. We hear you! Our lab is studying the causes behind LC. We hope to find better diagnostics & treatments.
A picture of a grey and teal ribbon with the word long COVID typed in white on the grey part. The title of the image says "Long COVID Awareness Day" and is dated 15 March 2025 which is today.

📚 For those of you out there interested in the role of SARS-COV-2 reservoirs and persistence in Long COVID. Check out our earlier perspective in @mja.com.au it came out late 2024 but certainly relevant today! #LongCOVID

🐳 Join us in sunny Lorne, Australia next month, 19-21 Feb, for the @theviin.bsky.social Infection and Immunity Conference. 🪼 Absolutely great line-up this year! In person (sea-side🐚) and virtual registration options available too. Don't miss out- www.lorneinfectionimmunity.org/registration

We found most KTx had impaired serological responses. Predictors of poor responses included higher mycophenolate dose and low B cell counts and in dialysis elevated monocyte counts. This work is a collaboration with Bill Mulley and colleagues at Monash Health. 2/2

Our other focus is studying vaccine responses in vulnerable people. In July we published our first study on serological responses & clinical outcomes of 3‐dose #COVID19 vaccine schedule in kidney #transplant recipients & people on #dialysis. doi.org/10.1002/cti2... More on these groups in 2025! 1/2

In this study, we found that serological responses to COVID-19 vaccines in kidney transplant recipients lag behind people receiving dialysis by approximately one dose. Predictors of poor responses we...

Very beneficial discussions during #AVS12 panel on Indigenous virology including how the Nagoya Protocol relates to our work - lots to learn but here is some basic information specific to Australia: www.dcceew.gov.au/science-rese...

What can researchers do right away? To start, non-indigenous people can up-skill with cultural sensitivity training to ensure we can create cultural safe workplaces for First Nations people. If your institution doesn't offer this campaign for access to this training #AVS12

Very interesting to understand the different perspectives on naming viruses isolated from country and also the data governance framework considerations when taking samples from the environment too. Looking forward to hearing more from a larger discussion from Alison Imrie. #AVS12
gabrielakhoury.bsky.social
Both Natalie Netzlar and Trevor Lithgow emphasised that when working on country it is so important that community is involved from the start e.g. co-design and not just as 'sign off'. As Natalie nicely highlights it makes a huge difference to coming across as working 'on' vs 'with'.

Next up at #AVS12 is the Indigenous Virology session. Looking forward to hearing from the panel members - Natalie Netzlar, Allison Imrie, Trevor Lithgow &
Lloyd Dolan. To get insights on how AVS and research in general can improve representation of first nations people in the field of Virology.
