If a government tells you that you can’t call it authoritarian, it’s authoritarian.

My optimistic take is that systems-level thinkers from other domains can learn how to build durability later-career, while bringing their domain expertise to the problem

Not sure though. Durability is hard, and often quite manual...

We don't code to create code, we code to animate people and other machines...

But the pipeline into creating code is breaking down...

I think the primary use case would/should be data providers creating and statically serving stac-geoparquet

End users can use stac-geoparquet as a smaller, more useful export format (you can do this now in stac-map from a search) but this is a bit more niche

We built stac-map, a lightweight, map-first prototype for exploring STAC GeoParquet in your browser. Built w/ DuckDB, geoarrow, & semantic STAC search, explore STAC GeoParquet files directly in the browser.

Try it: developmentseed.org/stac-map/

Shoutouts:

- @indraneel.org for helping this React n00b Do Better™
- @zacdezgeo.github.io for green-lighting the time
- @developmentseed.org for support open source development as a part of my day-to-day

Feature requests and bug reports welcome: github.com/developments...

Blog post up for stac-map: developmentseed.org/blog/2025-09...

A very imperfect prototype of a map-first #STAC app, it includes:

- stac-geoparquet visualization and download
- Experimental natural language collection search

Uses #deck.gl, @duckdb.org, #geoarrow, and github.com/stac-utils/r...

stac-map makes exploring STAC GeoParquet as simple as zooming around a map.

Frontend dev can be really frustrating, but it's fun to make a thing that you can play with

On a slightly different note than usual, my wife and our friend are doing an epic relay of the #colorado-trail

I made a progress tracking website (www.gadom.ski/ct-relay/) and some of the technical bits were interesting enough to make a light write-up: www.gadom.ski/posts/ct-rel...

Aiming for end of the month to announce, but here's what we're working on: developmentseed.org/stac-map/

I'm getting some (much needed) help on the frontend (h/t @indraneel.org), but the core idea is this:

- map-first @stacspec.bsky.social viz
- stac-geoparquet as first-class

The rest is open

I might build a visualization tool soon

It will likely go poorly

“Altman is backing a tool called The Orb, built by Tools for Humanity, that says it will offer “proof of human” in a world where AI makes it harder to distinguish what, and who, is real online.”

phew so the guy who helped create the problem happens to also have the solution what are the chances

The best we can do is try to build real relationships, however we can.

That at least gives you something to fall back on when you get it wrong.

Recognizing the signs when a ✔️ isn't enough is hard. Sometimes I miss. I still don't have a formula to do it right, I feel like I'm constantly working on The Right Way

Which is kinda fun, in its own way

Not to say that managers, communicators, whatever (I am most definitely not a manager at DevSeed) don't have an empathetic and caring role to play in the modern workforce

It's just... hard... to always get the async comms right
gadom.ski
Overheard at my post work 🚲🍺: "I told my manager what was going on in Slack, and all they gave me was a check mark. How rude is that?"

Whew... I have Thoughts...

Managing remote is hard. I'm starting to feel old over here bc I empathize with that manager and their check mark ✔️

We’re hiring a senior-level Frontend Engineer!

This role is about building tools that help people use Earth data to tackle real-world problems — from climate and conservation to disaster response and open science.

Remote, open-source, and meaningful.

I'd love to follow more folks who are building open geo stuff in the web ecosystem - who am I missing? Appreciate maybe that is a small niche for BlueSky

While more robust search systems will hit other fields, the "description" field (for better or for worse) can be a dumping ground for all of your key info.

This gives models an easy place to look, even if they don't know anything else about STAC.
gadom.ski
If you're building a @stacspec.bsky.social catalog, make sure to include a rich, informative text description

As we're experimenting with STAC natural language search at @developmentseed.org, I'm seeing the "description" field as the first entrypoint for the language model...

Thanks a lot @gadom.ski for the presentation, stac-geoparquet works really well and simple for our purposes so far.
