Not a bad film per se--it's competently made and features some cool carnage. But DEAD SNOW's one of those horror flicks that exist primarily to pay homage to other, significantly better movies. With so many exciting horror films out there, it's hard to work up enthusiasm for something so unambitious

tom allen on desperate living for the village voice in 1977 (reviewed alongside rabid & bertrand blier's femmes fatales)
But I will swear by the following observations: There is not a single, gratuitous camera angle or shot in Desperate Living. Beneath the sleaze and the uniformly hysterical pitch of the acting, Waters is an austerely economical director who is figuratively comparable to Bresson. He is a driven, integral stylist. His troupe are beautiful ogres because they collaborate in absolute harmony with his ends, and are, therefore, not exploited. To paraphrase Rex Reed, Where else would these people go when the sun goes down?
None of these comments come easy; they are hard begrudged because to extrapolate praiseworthy style from chillingly alien content is to skate on thin ice and to risk critical dandyism.

I was underwhelmed by The Neon Bible when I first saw it at the NYFF decades ago, but it's grown on me a bit since. Davies didn't seem to think highly of the John Kennedy Toole novel it's based on. During the NYFF q and a, he theorized that Toole's mom had actually written it.

The ultimate underground movie--a lyrical junkyard allegory annotated w chunks of mainly ’30s found footage. “A documentary showcase for the underdog’s spontaneous, uncontrolled fantasy” (Parker Tyler), desperately, despairingly beautiful, never more relevant.
